Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore Miscellaneous Guide
By Kevin Roberts

This is a quite odd hodgepodge of things about the Playstation 2 masterpiece
that has me screaming "Better than Tekken." But I won't get into that. There's
a wealth of information you won't find anywhere else in here. It was my first
game for the Playstation 2, and I bought it the day before launch. There are
some genuinely strange things in this game, and I try to address many of them.
While little of the guide can be refered to for gameplay help (and most of the
other guides can't be either, as there is a complete and easy to access move
list in the manual, and all of the costume unlocking things don't seem to work.
My advice for that is play as much as you can, and the costumes will follow.
If you do party play, play one round versus and 30 seconds at smallest life
gauge with random characters, and watch how fast the costumes stack up), these
are some things that you can search for with gusto. I've played probably 30
hours of Dead or Alive, and I still find new things. I want submissions out
the wazoo, so send in anything you have. If anybody has the patience to comb
through the game for things I've missed, your's would be a welcome e-mail.

------------------------------
Story Mode Explanation

Kasumi: Kasumi's a great fighter for people with a little experience with the
game. She's among the fastest, and she has some fairly damaging moves, along
with a long range throw that'll catch everybody off guard. One of the better
characters. Kasumi meets up with her clone right off the bat. She was cloned
as part of Project Epsilon. She is Hayate's sister, and, as explained in the
manual, was cloned when Hayate failed. Her clone fights her. Luckily, the clone
is a shoddy imitation, and an easy fight. Then, Hayabusa must protect her, as
per his promise to Hayate, by eliminating her from the tournament. Upon beating
Hayabusa and a random opponent, you encounter Ayane. Ayane, who is quite
similar to Kasumi (I forgot the connection between them), is jealous and fights
Kasumi. Upon winning, you get a nice shot of Kasumi's butt, and you meet up
with Ein, who, as you know, is Hayate. Beating him brings you into Tengu's
battle. However, this duel ends up oddly. There's no ending cutscene! However,
if you have the patience to watch through the credits, you'll find a disappoint-
ing little scene starring a flower on a lonely mountain. I'm guessing this'll
be part of Kasumi's story in DOA:3
Hayabusa: My favorite fighter in the game has a cool, but disinteresting
story. It is one of the many that revolve around Hayate. To begin with,
Hayabusa shows off in one of the coolest cutscenes in the game that has no
significance to the story but is impossibly cool, in which he chops down many
metal poles with his katana. Next, he meets Kasumi. Before Hayate's disappear-
ance, Hayabusa apparently promised Hayate that he'd protect Kasumi. That means
not letting her participate in the tournament. So Hayabusa must defeat her.
He leaves her and soon meets up with Ein. After defeating him, Ein comes to
the realization that he once knew Hayabusa. By defeating Tengu, Hayabusa has
eliminated evil and he departs.
Gen Fu: Talk about space filler. This guy is a terrible fighter with one of
the most disinteresting stories in the game. He is Leifang's grandfather. To
begin with, he fights Leon for no apparent reason. Jann Lee (Leifang's love
interest?) is his next opponent. He's a protective granddaddy, eh? Helena is
next up. She asks him what his purpose for being in the tournament is. He
reveals that its to save someone's life. After Tengu's defeat, he walks over
and begins to reach for Tengu's nose. He says that the nose of the Tengu will
cure any disease, and mentions Mae Lin. She's (obviously) the sick loved one
whose life Gen Fu must save. So I'm guessing Gen Fu rips off Tengu's nose.
What a horribly unpleasant idea.
Helena: Helena is no great fighter. She's fast, but for the most part, her moves
are weaker than the other speedy fighter. To begin with, she flashes back to a
scene some years ago in her childhood. She's an opera singer, and she's
practicing
with her mom. A sniper sight flutters around their heads. Helena is hit in the
shoulder, and Helena's mom is nailed in the head and falls over, splattering
blood on Helena's innocent face. That is her impetus for fighting in the tourna-
ment, to seek revenge against the sniper. She meets Ein, comments on Project
Epsilon, and continues on fight Gen Fu. She makes it clear to him that its a
secret about her vengeance. After beating him, she goes on to fight Ayane. Ayane
was the one the many years ago who shot Helena's mom. Ayane is unrepentant, and
actually careless. After the match, which takes place in the Opera House, Helena
takes back a watch. She stands in the fire (which, though a cool effect, is
unexplained as to how it got there. Did Helena burn the Opera House? Will we
ever
know? She holds one of those old fashioned picture carrying watches in her hand.
After Tengu's defeat, she opens the watch, and walks off, feeling that justice
was
served.
Tina: Tina's a good fighter (and the sexiest fighter in the game), but she's a
little too slow to keep up with Kasumi and Ayane. Good throws and great costumes
though. Tina originally faces Lei Fang. It's kind of a space filler cut scene
where Lei Fang says Tina doesn't know what power truly is. Bass sees Tina's
modeling poster, where she's in a skimpy bikini. The stuff of great literature.
Then, Tina meets Zack. Tina's obviously 'kicking it along' with somebody else,
and
she beats it into Zack's ugly, womanly (in a negative sense) head. She finally
meets Bass. He's just slightly more than angry at her career choices. So she
fights him to prove she's mature enough, I guess. When Tina wins, she takes an
amazing(ly sexy) pose, and says she learned it all from Bass. Picture Bass
modeling woman's underwear...excuse me while I dry heave my guts up. Then she
faces Tengu. At the ending scene, she wears a sexy fur gown... and gets the crap
beat out of her by animal rights activists. No, just kidding. She does wear a
sexy
fur gown though, and Bass sees her on TV and smashes his TV.
Bass: Bass is an oddball. He's probably the best fighter in the game when it
comes to throws, but he's slow and he's a terrible kicker. I don't dislike his
style, and he's got tons of lines, but I couldn't get a hold on his style for
quite a while. Bass is Tina's overprotective Daddy. Bass begins his story with
an interesting scene in which he finds Tina's very sexy poster. You can find it
in the CG Gallery, too. Bass is slightly upset that his busty daughter is
doing this kind of thing. Bass then meets Zack. Zack has quite a crush on Tina.
He pretends that a prairie dog is Tina, 'cause he can't get the real deal. Bass
stampedes out and beats up a suprised Zack. Soon, Bass finds his way to Tina.
He remembers his request many years ago. 'Grow up to be a lady.' Apparently,
Bass feels that being a slutty lady isn't being a lady, and he fights Tina.
After he beats Tengu, the two have a joyful reunion though.
Zack: Zack is actually a better fighter than many characters, but no self-
respecting
male would ever stake a claim to being perfect at Zack. Anyways, he's got what
you'd call a crap story. There's really nothing but fluff here. He meets Tina,
breaks a mirror, meets Leon, breaks a mirror. Finally he declares a prairie dog
to be Tina. Bass comes to fight him. He beats Tengu. Same old, same old. Lastly,
there is a fairly odd cinematic where he snowboards off into the horizon. Where
did he get the snowboard, and when did it snow at the Miyama?
Leon: This guy has two interesting cutscenes, but for the most part, his story
is complete trash. He's a decent fighter, though, but I prefer Bayman. At the
beginning of the story, Leon holds a dying women bundled in a blanket in his
arms. She mentions that the man Roland loved was the strongest man in the world.
He meets up with Zack, who doesn't know him, and Gen Fu, who admonishes him that
old men can still fight. After the defeat of Tengu, Leon walks off into the
desert. He says that he is the man Roland loved. Roland was the dead woman. If
you check the credits, Roland is in there. She's the only non-player (other than
the system voice) who has lines in the game.
Jann Lee: Jann Lee is a truly excellent fighter. He is probably the best
beginners
character in the game. His story is also nothing special. He blows out some
candles
with his iron fists (quite cool). Then he faces Hayabusa. His response seems to
confirm he's some sort of commoner (you'd think that a commoner would try to act
intellectually in the face of such an insult). Afterwards, Leifang gives her
heartfelt words. She wants to live in Jann Lee's world. Leifang not good English!
Anyways, it ends up in Jann Lee beating Leifang (if you've got some controller
skillz). After fighting Tengu, Jann Lee does another seriously cool feat. He's
probably the most seriously ripped character in the game. I'd love to have
muscles like his without looking like an over-muscular bodybuilder
(unfortunately,
he's obviously as real as a Tengu, so there's no chance). He punches from horse
stance, and knocks a full grown tree over. Ripped, I tell you!
Leifang: Just for kicks, and out of sheer boredom, I'm going to do this in
Leifang's language. It's not a great story anyways, so you won't miss much.
Leifang no good, no! She slow, bad attack! I no use her..maybe you better!
Leifang meet Tina. Tina mean! Leifang know power! Leifang beat Tina, meet
Gen Fu! How protect granddaughter by fight her? Huh? Win fight, good! Meet
Helena in elevator. Elevator omen mean must fight. Brawl good! Win brawl at
Danger Zone! Go on. Fight Jann Lee! Leifang master kung-fu so she date him!
No dice! She beat, beat Tengu, too! Good job! Odd ending, no meaning!
Ayane: Ayane is quite a fighter. She's fast, and a perfect Kasumi counter.
Her story is less interesting though. It starts with Helena confronting her (see
Helena's story guide for the background on that). Then, she sees Kasumi. This
is the apex of her story mode. She accuses Kasumi of being the heroine of the
two. She's royally pissed. After the fight (which there is a secret ending to,
though I've never seen it outside of the Exciter video) she simply walks away
contented. After beating Tengu, she utters on of the oddest, worst translated
lines in the game. She announces that she is 'The Miyama's (stage of the Tengu
fight) woman Tengu." That's it.
Ein: Ein's mysterious past comes forward. Ein's story is the whole basis
for almost everybody's stories. He battles his old friend Hayabusa, who
acknowledge's his presence, despite the fact that Ein has no idea who he is.
After that, he reaches the weirdest cutscene in the game. A inverted color
Costume 2 Tengu dances to a bizarre chant. Some designer was really tripping.
Then he fights against Helena, who mentions Project Epsilon (the project in
which Hayate was modified, though it didn't work and the project was canned,
with no huge difference in Hayate) and Ein no longer being under mind control.
Ein duels with Ayane, who also knows him. Then, he fights against his sister,
Kasumi. After duking it out with Tengu, Ein figures out that he is Hayate,
Shinobi of the Wind.

Music Guide

This another one of those useless sections that serve only to entertain you
and make your friends think you're 'hardcore'. Like this entire guide, it's
got no real purpose, but it does provide an interesting reference. As with
my quotes section, a lot of the allure is in knowing more than I do. I'll
search for every time a musical score is used, but you and I both know that
there's no way I'll get a complete list the first time. The tracks are in
order of how they appear on the Audio Options area. Help me out with this
if you can. The new band for the PS2 version, Bomb Factory, is actually
quite decent, if you like loud noise and some very odd lyrics (obviously
translated). Deadly Silence Beach, indeed. I definitely do not have the
patience to finish this right now, so I'll probably get to it by the next
update. Still, I'd really love it if you sent this in.

Costumes

Dead or Alive was always famous for its...er...bouncy physics. Dead or Alive
has the same thing, only a little less so. However, their costumes are still
manly or sexy. Vote from a scale of 1 to 10 on Dead or Alive 2 fashions.
Considering that DOA is obviously targeted to men, we'll use sexy scales for
women, and manliness scales for men. I haven't seen several costumes, so I
rate'm as I see'm. E-mail me your thoughts and I'll average it out on here.

I was thinking of adding some awards for the more poorly translated Engrish

The Exciter Music Video

I didn't notice this for the longest time. Its an amazing video, featuring
several cool scenes, including Ayane's fatality, which everybody should see
but is impossible to trigger. All you have to do is turn it on and wait. Plus,
Bomb Factory's Exciter is a pretty sick song as it is.

Things I Love It If You Submit

Here's the deal: I'm not nearly done with this FAQ. There's a wealth of quotes
and miscellaneous things. Here's a short list of things I'd love it if you'd
submit. If you don't have the time, thanks anyway.

--Quotes I've missed from battle, especially character specific
--Quotes I've missed from battle losing (started but not finished)
--Any character guide or move list I'd gladly add
--A stage guide including some info (numbers of levels, looping or non-looping,
music played, etc.)
--Anything on the music
--Whatever you think I missed
