I N T R O D U C T I O N
=======================

Welcome to whats going to become the most complete Final Fantasy 9 guide
EVER!
Final Fantasy IX is the next game in the long running series of excellent
RPGs. This is why of course I have chosen to do a guide on it, simply
because FF9 is the best RPG ever created (Until FFX comes out...).

As soon as FFIX is released in Japan (20th July 2000) I will have a
walkthrough to it straight away! So on that day, or a few days after come to
www.Gamewinners.com or www.Gamefaqs.com.

===================
C H A R A C T E R S
===================

Here are the main characters of Final Fantasy 9. Some of the info here is
from but I have put it into my own words.
Please go visit their site. Note that there is a section called "Familiar",
this is like a pet which will help you.

-----------
Character 1
-----------

Name: Zidane Tribal

Age: 16

Sex: Male

Job: Thief

Familiar: A creature that looks like a cat.

Description: He has grown up from a very poor family. He is currently making
his living by stealing things from other people. As he is a member of a
thieves guild.

-----------
Character 2
-----------

Name: VIVI Orniter (yes it is in all capitals, don't ask me why)

Age: 9 (thats like the youngest age ever in a Final Fantasy game...)

Sex: Male

Job: Black Mage

Familiar: "A mini mage" taken from

Description: A Black Mage (he looks like the wizards from FF Tactics)
He doesn't really have a real job, and just wanders round the world.
A lost soul...Plays a big part of the story.

-----------
Character 3
-----------

Name: Adelbert Steiner

Age: 33

Sex: Male

Job: Serves as the princess's Knight.

Familiar: A bat.

Description: This guy is a royal knight who serves his master Garnet the
princess. He likes to think of himself as the leader of the group and is
very stubborn. Kind of like Barret from Final Fantasy 7.

-----------
Character 4
-----------

Name: Garnet Tale Axlexandros

Age: No one knows.

Sex: Female

Job: Princess (some job)

Familiar: A bird with a rainbow colured tail.

Description: The mysterious princess, not a lot is known about her except
that Adelbert serves her. She was also in some Japanese Coca-Cola
advertisment on TV. Hmmm...

-----------
Character 5
-----------

Name: Quina Quen

Age: No one knows.

Sex: No one knows. (this person has a Chefs hat over her head...)

Job: Chef?

Familiar: A minature version of itself (NO! Not two of them!)

Description: Square, what were you on when you thought of this person?
Judging by the name, I think this person is female. And she has chefs hat
pulled right over her head (?). I think this is the "Cait Sith" of the
group, which isn't a great thing...

-----------
Character 6
-----------

Name: Freija Cresent (cool name!)

Age: No one knows.

Sex: Female

Job: ?

Familiar: "A flying sprite" Taken from .

Description: She seems to like nature, and has had a very traumatic past.
Apart from that we don't know much about this woman.

-----------
Character 7
-----------

Name: Salamander Coral

Age: No one knows.

Sex: Male

Job: ?

Familiar: A salamander, just like his name of course.

Description: This person is really STRONG and POWERFUL who could have anyone
in a fight. I think we may have to endure two Barrets in this version of
Final Fantasy...NOOOOOOOOO! Just kidding! It should be allright though,
Salamander and Adelbert will be dissing each other throughout the whole
game!

-----------
Character 8
-----------

Name: Eiko Callor

Age: 6 (Oh my god...)

Sex: Female

Job: ?

Familiar: A creature, like a moogle, or is it a moogle?

Description: Well, I was thinking (and you) that VIVI was young at the age
of 9 but 6 years old? Come on! Well Square, couldn't put in just a normal 6
year old, so this 6 year old has special powers, and is VERY advanced for
her age.

====================
B A S I C S T O R Y and other things...
====================

(Some elements are from the excellent site )

Well, hardly anything is known about the story yet. All I know is that the
creator of Final Fantasy wants to bring back those crystals (yay!). From the
screenshots and movies I have seen, the game looks like it is mainly set in
the sky on massive airships. There are floating cities and everything, there
is even a yearly event where a airship with a theatre in, comes round to
your city (I think).

-----------
Latest News
-----------

- I am also looking forward to another excellent soundtrack because Nobuo
Uematsu is once again doing the music (hooray!) for another Final Fantasy
game.

- The setting for this game is now more in the fantasy setting with dragons
and things. The reason for this is because this is the last single digit
game of the series! So the creator wanted to go back to where Final Fantasy
all began.

- And the characters have once again gone all cartoony for this sequel.

--------------------------------------
Current Features and Upcoming Features
--------------------------------------

1. Now you can have FOUR people in your party at the same time!

2. Runs at 30fps (maybe more), like FF8, not like FF7 which ran at 15fps.

3. Characters have MP.

4. Will defintely use the Dual Shock, Analog and Vibration modes.

-------
Rumours
-------

- The WHOLE game takes place in the sky - Well that does seem rather
unlikely but you never know...

- Limit Breaks have been deleted from this FF - I don't have any info to
confirm this rumour but I don't think Square would get rid of Limits as they
are excellent. Not likely man!

- The names in my character profiles aren't accurate - After looking around
it seems every web site has different names for the characters! I think I
will still use mine though, until this is properly confirmed. But I think my
names ARE accurate and are the ones used in the final game.

- The actual release date for Final Fantasy 9 is 19th July - Hmmm? I am not
sure about this one but 20th, 19th both the same to me...

- The characters actually speak - Woah! That would be cool! Maybe on the PS2
Final Fantasy games, but a definite NO on the normal PS unless Squaresoft
want to make this game have like 15 CDs...

-------------
Release Dates
-------------

JAPANESE Final Fantasy IX - 19th or 20th of July, 2000 (See rumours section)

USA Final Fantasy IX - About September or October.

PAL (UK) Final Fantasy IX - About Late-October or early November.

PAL (rest of the world) - Early November to Early December.

I think these are about right, but I suspect the PAL and USA versions may
even come out a little earlier.

Full Story
----------

Well this can't be finished now can it?

H O W T O P L A Y F I N A L F A N T A S Y IX
=================================================

--------
Controls
--------

Well as Squaresoft, always use the same control layout for every
Final Fantasy game (Most of the time anyway). We can expect the controls
to be a little like this...

X (Cross) - Cancel, Run

[] (Square) - Maybe a card game or extra option, or nothing at all.

() (Circle) - Talk to people, confirm choices.

/\ (Triangle) - Call up the main character screen (with magic on etc)

R1 - Used as a trigger in FF8, maybe causes extra damage when fighting if
timed correctly.

R2 - Probably nothing.

L1 - I think Squaresoft might make something of this button.

L2 - Probably Nothing.

Select - Maybe a menu guide (like FF7) while in fights.

Start - Pause game, only will work in fights, of course like every FF game.

L1+R1 - Run away, the FF7 way. (L2+R2 for FF8)

SELECT+START+L1+L2+R1+R2 - Reset the game. Very likely.

Or Squaresoft could go for the FF8 or Xenogears control layout but I think
this is a bit unlikely, considering how well the system worked with FF7.
Well anyway im sure they will come up with a good system. After all its
Squaresoft!

-------
Battles
-------

Judging by some of the images of battles I saw, there are indeed 4
characters at once, meaning more hectic battles. And there is defintely
magics and summons. Well it looks like, as always, they are using the old
ATB system. This is a system where each character has a timebar and when it
fills up the character may then have a turn.

Also, to my delight, MP has come back from the dead, which is good! Whenever
you cast a magic spell or summon, your MP will drop depending on the spell
and how powerful it is.

I think the battles are going to be just like FF7 and FF8.

---------
Exploring
---------

This will be the same as in every Final Fantasy game. There will probably be
a world map (in fact there WILL be a world map). And the majority of the
exploration will be on Pre-Rendered backgrounds. Not much to say on this
topic
really. Oh yea, and remember, TALK TO EVERYONE! Whenever you go to a new
town
talk to everyone there, you will probably get a few items and clues on what
to do next.

----------------
The Magic System
----------------

The main reason why every FF game is unique is because every one has a
different magic system (most of them anyway). This one as revealed by the
creator of Final Fantasy 9, seems to be like the FFVI (FF6 JAP/ FF3 USA)
system of doing things. Each character has an area that they are very good
at, you cannot change what they are good it. This skill will be trained up
throughout the whole game.

There is also talk of another magical system, which is kind of like the one
used in Konami's Vandel Hearts 2. Each weapon or armour that is equipped has
different magical abilites. Say that a new sword has the power to cast "Fire
1" in battle, well the only way to cast Fire 1 would be to equip that sword
right? Wrong, If use the sword and its magical spell long enough on a
character, you will eventually learn it. You will be able to cast this spell
now, anywhere without equipping that sword! Pretty cool hey! Another thing
is that could make the game last longer is that each weapon does different
things when equipped to different characters. For example, You got a new
armour set, when you equip it on Zidane Tribal, Zidane can now cast the
spell "Cure 2", But if you equip this armour onto VIVI Orniter then VIVI
will be able to cast "Bolt 3". Do you see where im coming from? Good. This
feature is actually quite interesting and different. It would take quite a
long time to see what effect it has on every character. Well done Squaresoft
if you use this. Its good!

-----------------
The Summon System
-----------------

I don't know anything about the summon system, yet. Like on what I said
above
a weapon could carry a summon in it! Cool! Meaning you will be hunting down
all sorts of bows and swords.

=================================================
F R E Q U E N T L Y A S K E D Q U E S T I O N S
=================================================

Q. Why did you start your FAQ so damn early?

A. I started it really early, so I can get a bit of a head start above
everyone else, this FAQ is really good chance to prove myself. Also by
putting it on now, I can get people to contribute to my guide. After
judgement day (July 20th,when it is released) I hope to have a really good
guide on the net.

Q. In this Final Fantasy, will we be able to get such items that give that
same effect as "All" and "Quadra Magic" to your magic?

A. Well, Final Fantasy 8 didn't include such options, so it is looking quite
doubtful at the moment.

Q. Do you think there will be any sort of magic combos in this Final
Fantasy?

A. It is a bit early to tell, but I would guess that Squaresoft has put
something in that lets you combine two magics together to get different
effects.

Q. Is it true that some Final Fantasy characters appeared in a Japanese
Coca-Cola advertisement on TV over there?

A. Yes! Download it from the net (I think www.FFshrine.com), It has Zidane,
Garnet and VIVI in. And they are chasing after the top of a coca-cola
bottle. Why? I have no idea!

Q. What about the Final Fantasy 8 card game, will that be included in FF9? I
really enjoyed playing that game, and collecting all of them.

A. Maybe, there is a rumour going round, that Square have already put this
option in the game. But it is a rumour... I don't see why not though! The
FF8 card was very popular I think Square will either keep it in or put
something else even better in the game. A new game? Hmmm?

Q. Will the Graphics in Final Fantasy 9 be any better?

A. This game is going to reach the limits of what the normal PSX can do, we
can defintely expect the best game graphics in any game EVER for the normal
PS. Also the CG animation is gonna rock! It will also probably be
intergrated into gameplay like FF8, and maybe even use the FMV tricks from
Parasite Eve 2. Anythings possible!

Q. Will Final Fantasy 9 be compatible with the Pocketstation?

A. Good question, Well the game will defintely be better with a
Pocketstation but as the Pocketstation has only been released in Japan and
it isn't selling that well, I doubt Square will either bother putting some
sort of mini game option in. But the Triple Triad (card game from FF8) Would
be well cool on a Pocketstation! We just have to wait and see!

Q. Will Final Fantasy 9 work on a PlayStation 2? If yes, will the graphics
be better?

A. Yes, it will work on PS2 because only the really early Japanese games
won't work on PS2. But unforunatly the graphics, I think, won't be enhanced
because most Squaresoft games that have been tested on PS2 either have no
improvement or even worse graphics. Its just the way Squaresoft games are
programmed.

Q. How many CDs will Final Fantasy 9 take up?

A. My guess would be four or even 3, Squaresoft won't bother wasting money
producing 5 cds for a game on the NORMAL PSX when the PlayStation 2 is
already out.
