i. INTRODUCTION AND REVISIONS

Sydney 2000, based on the 2000 Olympics, which were held in Australia this
year (2000) was released on the PSX in August 2000. The game has a total of
12 events to participate in, but the Olympic gameplay mode has several training
activities you can partake in. It's not the best game in the world, and unless
you've played and liked Olympic/Track & Field type games in the past, this game
isn't worth the purchase, but a rental instead. Anyway, the game can be quite
confusing and difficult at times, therefore I created this FAQ which contains
strategies for all the events (soon to come.) Please note that this FAQ is
only intended to help you gain better records in each of the events, and that
purpose only.

section, along with the Basic Controls, and game modes. Game Modes. Started
the "Olympic Training" section. So far, I have strategies for the first
two training activites, in the first two events. Much more to come.

II. GAME MODES

-+- Arcade -+-
The Arcade mode lets you play all 12 events, in whatever order you choose
to play them in, and tallies your results at the end of each event, thus
creating your rank against the other competitors. After each event, you
will be rewarded points based on how well you did in that event, then all
the points are added up and your rank is decided by how many points you
have. Standard Aracde mode type of play.

-+- Olympic -+-
This is the main mode of play in the game. You must train for three stages
in each event to complete each. Once all the events are completed you can
partake in the Olympic Games. See the "Olympic Traning" section for
strategies on all of the event training.

-+- Head on Head -+-
I'm not too sure about this mode of play, but I think it is where you can
load saved games and compete against your ghosts, trying to break past
records. I've yet to test out this mode as I don't have enough room left
on my memory card. Note that this mode requires use of a memory card, so
if you don't have one, you can't use this mode of play.

-+- Coaching -+-
A very useful mode of gamplay for beginners of the game. Here, you can
choose to train in any of the 12 events you wish to train in, and you will
not be competing against anyone else except your ghost. Useful to test
out the controls, view cinemas on how to perform each event, and get a feel
for the events before you compete in the real thing. You will also get an
unlimited amount of tries for each event.

III. EVENT LISTING (5/12 Complete)

The Events below can be played in either the Arcade Mode, which is simply
a quick one time race in each event; The Olympic Mode, where each is done to
qualify for the next stage; and the Coaching mode, where you can test out each
event as many times as you like.


-+- 100 Meter Sprint -+-

Description: The 100 Meter Sprint is simply an all-out race where you try
to run as fast as possible along a 100 meter strip of track,
in order to beat your opponents to the goal line.

Controls: Alternate between X and Circle to run
Press an action button to lean at the end of the race

Strategy: The easiest way to place in the high ranks in this event is
to not look at the screen while pressing the buttons. Rapidly
press X then Circle as fast as you can, and don't stop
pushing them until you get to the finish line. If you don't
look at the screen, but rather focus on your controls, you
can easily place first in this event.


-+- 110 Meter Hurdles -+-

Description: Here, you must maintain a rapid speed while at the same time
jump over hurdles as you come to them. The key to winning
here is running face and keeping an eye on the screen for
oncoming hurdles.

Controls: Alternate between X and Circle to run
Press an action button to jump over the hurdles
Press an action button to lean at the end of the race

Strategy: Running should be no problem here, but the hurdles can be.
Time your jumps so your player launches off the ground when
you are about an inch away from the hurdle, othrewise you will
knock it down, causing a decrease in speed. After clearing
all the hurdles, get a good lean at the end of the race to
get ahead of all the other competitors.


-+- Javelin -+-

Description: The goal here is to throw the pole in your hand as far as
possible. If you can throw it farther than any of the other
competitors, you'll place first.

Controls: Alternate between X and Circle to run
Press an Action Button to set the degree of the throw

Strategy: You first have to gain up enough speed before your throw, so
alternately (and rapidly) press X followed by Circle and
continue pressing them until you run at least half way through
which is when the meter will freeze at whatever speed it's
at, then you can press an action button to set the degree of
your throw. Set it to at least above 50 degrees to gain some
major distance. The key here is to gain up enough speed so
your throw will go farther.


-+- Hammer -+-

Description: A large gate will be surrounding you here, and the key is to
gain up enough strength, then throw the hammer at the precise
time and angle so that it lands inside the sector and goes a
far distance.

Controls: Alternate between X and Circle to build strength
Press an Action Button to set the angle and throw

Strategy: To start off, you need to build up a lot of strength, which
can be done by rapidly alternating between the X and Circle
Buttons until your player starts spinning the hammer. The
key here is to set an ideal angle so the hammer will land
inside the sector, while releasing it at the precise time
to get a lot of distance. Try setting the angle to about 50
degrees and release it on the right side of the sector. If
the hammer hits the cage or lands outside of the sector, you
fail. This can be tough, but practice makes perfect.


-+- 100 Meter Freestyle Swimming -+-

Description: You will be swimming from one end of the pool, down to the
other end, where you must turn around and swim back and do
this all faster than the other competitors.

Controls: Alternate between X and Circle to Swim
Press an Action Button to turn around
Press an Action Button to reach at the end

Strategy: Right when you here the tone, start rapidly pressing the X
and Circle buttons alternately to swim. Once you get to the
other end of the pool, turn around, but make sure you do so
at the right time (not too close to the wall but not too far
back.) Swim back in the same manner and when you get to the
end, reach for the finish.

IV. OLYMPIC TRAINING (2/12 Complete)

In the Olympic gameplay mode, you will have to train in each event on three
different stages. The first is the easiest stage, and requires you to past
two training activities and one event arena, then you can qualify for the next
stage, which requires the same two training activities, only they are more
difficult this time around, and another event arena. Then you can qualify
again to get to the third stage which gives you access to a new training
activity. Once you finish all three training activities, and do the event
arena one more time, you can finally qualify to finish off that event.


-+- EVENT 1: 100 Meter Spring Training -+-

TREADMILL
- The treadmill is a very difficult activity to pass. Rapidly press the
X and circle buttons alternately to run, and when your meter is halfway
lit up, press the action button to do it again. Continue running,
and try to beat the clock. You can see how much more you have to do by
looking at the pink progress meter, and you can see how much time you
have left by looking at the blue time meter. Once you complete this,
do it again to fill up the entire first stage bar.

BENCH PRESS
- Here, you must build up a lot of strength by rapidly pressing the X and
circle buttons alternately, then press the action button to lift the
barbell one time. Keep your strength up, and lift as many times as
possible before time runs out. In the first stage, you'll have to lift
it 12 times within 30 seconds or so. This can be pretty easy just as
long as you keep your strength up.

-+- EVENT 2: 110 Meter Hurdles Training -+-

SKIPPING
- You will be using the digital pad for this training activity. When the
right foot arrow lights up, press the right button, and when the left
foot arrow lights up, press the left button, this will perform one skip.
To perform a double skip, press an action button. Watch the pink
progress meter to see how many you have done. Usually, you will do more
than the required amount in this event. In later stages, you will have
to do more skips.

HURDLE HOPS
- On the first stage, you will only have to jump over five hurdles, but
in later stages, the amount will increase. First, gain up your strength
until you reach the arrow, then press an action button to jump over the
hurdle. There isn't much time to waste in this activity, so make sure
you don't jump too soon, or you'll have to build up strength all over
again. Watch the pink meter to see your progress, blue meter to see how
much time you have left.
