Revision History:

1.0 - The start of the FFT Stealing/Mediation Guide. Minimal information.

1. How to use this guide

This guide is not a walkthrough; it is not a poaching list; it is not a
battle strategy guide. It is a guide to the items that can be stolen in Final
Fantasy Tactics. Some of these things are common knowledge; but others are
things you would never know to look for. It can also be used as a mediation
guide, so you know what human enemies you can recruit. I hope you make use of
it!

2. Story Battle stealing chart

The chart below concentrates on the items gained from story battles. It
only shows noteworthy ones right now, but if somebody helps me with this section
I will be able to include every battle in the game AND the items you can get.

a. The chart

The chart will be created when I know some items from each battle. Look in
remarks below for now.

b. Remarks

One of the best opportunities to steal comes in the battle inside Limberry
Castle. Marquis Elmdor has a full set of Genji equipment (second-best in the
game). However, it will take much persistance and luck in order to obtain these
items. You can increase your chances by following the tips in section 4, but you
may not be able to in this situation. In this case, position the thief DIRECTLY
IN FRONT OF ELMDOR and attempt to steal the SHIELD FIRST. The success rate does
not change depending on where you stand, so you want to take the worst position.
Also, if you steal the shield, the success rate on all of the other items will
rocket up. Meanwhile, have someone else either Speed Break him or Weapon Break
him (to stop him from breaking your stuff). It will be difficult, but it will
pay off.
Another good stealing opportunity (an easy one, I might add) is at the
first Murond Holy Place battle. There is a Summoner standing on top of the
building holding a rare Dragon Rod. One you get a thief up there, the steal rate
is high, around 50%. There is no reason to pass this up. If you do, though, you
can still get the rod either of the two times that you fight Kletian. However,
the steal rate from him is much lower.

3. Random Battle stealing chart

The chart below concentrates on the items gained from random battles. It
will only show a few right now, as I will have to replay the game to get them
all. NOTES: buyable means that this enemy will carry only items that you can
currently buy. Also, some items may only be attainable after a certain level (no
first-chapter Ultimus Bows).

a. The chart

Place Enemy encounter %(approx.) Item(s)

Bariaus Valley Archer 20% Ultimus Bow
Bariaus Hill Time Mage 40% High-level robe
Bariaus Hill Archer 30% Ultimus Bow
Finath River Oracle 35% buyable
Zirekile Falls Oracle 75% buyable
Germinas Peak Archer 75% Ultimus Bow
Araguay Woods Archer 10% Ultimus Bow
Zeklaus Desert Ninja 15% Ninja Swords (NSS)
Zeklaus Desert Summoner 5% Dracula Mantle, Light Robe

b. Remarks

For an Ultimus Bow, go to Germinas Peak if possible. It is the easiest
place to get one. Also, most Wizards or Time Magi carry a robe one level over
your current one.

4. Stealing tips

First rule of thumb: A TIME MAGE IS A BETTER THIEF THAN A THIEF. You
absolutely must bring a Time Mage along if you are going to steal. You can Haste
yorselves and Slow the enemy, or even better, Stop them. It usually brings the
success rate up about 10 points fro a Slow, 30 for a Stop. Also, use women. This
way, Steal Heart is more effective since there are more male then female enemies
in the game. A charmed person usually raises the success rate by about 10
points. Also, if you have Beowulf or an Oracle, you can use Sleep or Confuse on
the target. Confuse raises the success rate about 10 points, but Sleep sets the
success rate up to sometimes 60-70%! After all, they are sleeping, right? The
other one ability that helps with stealing is Speed Break, which acts like Slow
but is permanent.

5. Questions I Have

a. The battle theatre

There is a strange happening that most people have probably never
experienced in Final Fantasy Tactics. About .5% of the time you fight a battle
at Zeklaus Desert, you will find that your group will start on one side of the
battlefield and there will only be two enemies on the other side. However, on
closer inspection, you'll find that one of them is a guest! Anyway, you can just
sit back and watch them duke it out, since it is almost impossible to get close
enough to do damage. This has happened to me twice, both times with a Knight and
a Bull Demon. Is this a bug?

b. Do Summoners pay attention?

For some reason, it is a piece of cake to steal from Summoners no matter
what thier condition is. I was just wondering why I went up to a healthy
Summoner at Murond Holy and had a 58% steal rate on the Dragon Rod.

c. Other Questions

Many times in random battles at Araguay Woods and Mandalia Plains, I have
had Chocobos as guests for the battle. Why and when does it happen, and does it
happen anywhere?

6. Conclusion

I created this guide becuase there are no real guides on stealing for FFT.
I hope you enjoyed what little I could offer in this guide. Thanks for reading,
and I hope that at some time I could put your name below in the credits section!
