----------------------------------
1. Introduction
----------------------------------

Throughout Maple Story, there are various usable items to help you along your
own "story." Usable items are defined as any and all items that fall under
the "USE" tab of a character's inventory. All items (exception: bowman ammo)
can be activated by double clicking on them from your inventory. Certain
usable items can be bound to hotkeys for quick use, and this guide makes note
of such items.

THIS GUIDE WAS WRITTEN FOR THE WESTERN GLOBAL MAPLE STORY SERVER, now known
as SCANIA. All information reproduced here is for that server alone.
Naturally, there will be some overlap with the Eastern, Japanese, and Korean
servers, but I make no guarantees.

----------------------------------
2. Usable Item Basics
----------------------------------

Just like any other item, Usable Items can be bought and sold, both from
other players and NPC vendors. They also drop from monsters, like other
items. Naturally, the frequency with which specific items drop varies -
depending on their inherent value/rarity and what monster you kill.

Although theoretically you could play Maple Story without ever using a
Usable Item, you would find the game tedious and frustrating. The items
exist for a reason, so use them!

Similarly, there is no reason to keep items you cannot use or have very
limited use for, so share the wealth. You could be nice and give a stack of
1000 arrows to an unsuspecting newbie bowman for free (who just might
graciously fame you in return), or you could try your luck in Perion Server 1
and see how many Mesos you can make.

----------------------------------
2a. Potions
----------------------------------

Potions are those funny bottles with the colored liquid in them. In keeping
with Generic RPG tradition, Maple Story has potions that heal your Health
Points, replenish your Magic Points, and "boost" your stats for temporary
buffs. Affectionately referred to as "Pots," they will save your character
from many-a-tragic death.

Certain potions will also cure various status ailments cast upon you by
enemy spellcasters (such as the Jr. Boogie and Fierry).

Potions, by definition, can be hotkeyed to whatever key you decide to bind
them to. They are meant to be readily available, so as to get you out of
whatever sticky situations you find yourself in throughout the game.
Although the process for hotkeying items is fairly intuitive and simple
(and you should have learned how to do so from the tutorial on Maple Island),
I will reiterate here for the people who don't RTFM:

In the bottom right corner of your screen, there is a button labeled
"Key Setting." Click it (Or you can press the '' key, by default). This
launches the keyboard bind window. From here, you can open up your inventory
and drag the icon of the item to the appropriate key you want it bound to.

Almost all potions can be bought normally from vendor NPCs, and all drop
from at least one monster (if not many).

----------------------------------
2b. Food and Drink
----------------------------------

Food and Drink are one of a few enigmas in the game of Maple Story. They are
uncannily similar to Potions, in that specific foods and drinks will have the
same effect as a Healing or MP potion. However, there are some foods that
will simultaneously replenish HP and MP, which low level potions do not do.
Additionally, some quests will ask you for specific foods, but currently
there are only a few such quests (one asks for salad, the others for pure
water).

Ultimately, the price-to-healing ratio between food and potions is the same,
making it a personal preference of which to use. However, nearly all people
forego food and get potions simply because they are commonly dropped by
monsters (and available in every major town). Additionally, a large number
of RPGs contain potions as well, so people like the familiarity aspect of
potions.

That being said, certain food and drink can heal/replenish substantially
more HP/MP than potions. Although, you would have to be rather high level
before needing the amount of HP/MP such food and drink regenerate.

----------------------------------
2c. Scrolls
----------------------------------

By far the rarest of all Usable Items, Scrolls comprise nearly 95% of
Maple Story's upgrade system. The other 5% belongs to the NPCs in towns that
can upgrade about 2 items that very few people own. In other games, where
there are "Blacksmith" or "Upgrade" NPCs that will upgrade your items a set
amount for a set rate (plus or minus a few ores), Maple Story items can only
be upgraded by Scrolls.

Scrolls come in three different forms: 100% success rate, 60% success rate,
and 10% success rate. This is the balancing act Wizet has created in the
equipment-upgrade system:

100% scrolls give minimal benefit, but they are sure to work.

60% scrolls have little better than a coin flip's chance of working, but
give moderate benefits.

10% scrolls are practically a shot in the dark, but if successful, upgrades
a weapon leaps and bounds over an un-upgraded counterpart.

As this is the only way to upgrade a piece of equipment, Scrolls are highly
valued and retain value better than Equipment. Whereas people can keep
finding equipment, it often gets passed down to other players (rather than
getting sold back to vendors, especially level 30+ equipment which is better
sold to players). Scrolls are continually being found and used, and so will
hold their value in Maple Story's supply & demand economy.

All kinds of 100% scrolls can be bought from NPC Vendors, but 60% and 10%
scrolls must be found or received as quest rewards. Put that alongside the
fact that the benefits from 60% and 10% scrolls are higher, and one would
correctly deduce that such scrolls would be worth more than 100% scrolls.
Then, upon noticing that 100% scrolls go for 70,000 Mesos in NPC Stores, one
would quickly notice the market potential of 60% and 10% scrolls. Such
scrolls are valuable enough that someone with no more inventory slots for
a scroll would conceivably dump 100 MP pots to make room for that one scroll.

Thus, it would behoove you to save any and every scroll you find, even if you
can't use it. Some people make their livings trading scrolls; such people
tend to be very rich. Just like ores are constantly in demand, scrolls are
also constantly in demand, only 20 times more expensive.

You must decide for yourself (or, your bank account can decide for you)
whether or not you want to buy 10 10% scrolls and pray at least one will
work, or buy 5 60% scrolls and pray at least 2 will work, or just buy as many
100% scrolls as your equipment will allow and upgrade them with no worries.
Or you could just amass whatever scrolls you find/buy and go with that.

One must also bear in mind the longevity of Equipment: why upgrade your
weapon when you're just going to ditch it for another one? Only until
you gain levels sufficiently slowly is it usually worth it to upgrade an
item. If you do spring to upgrade an item, disregarding how long you will
use it, make sure you get a premium price when you resell it. Remind the
buyer that it is an upgraded item, and get your money's worth.

In short, Maple Story's upgrade system is a bit of a detachment from previous
upgrade systems, and allows for far more customization and variance in
equipment than a linear system where a +7 dagger is a +7 dagger, no more, no
less.

----------------------------------
2ci. Statistical Analysis of Upgrade Scrolls
----------------------------------

Currently in Maple Story, there is a large market for scrolls (and always
will be, according to the economics of the game). However, there are some
misconceptions regarding them. Hopefully this section will help inform those
not familiar with scrolls, or who have preconceived notions on the value and
usage of scrolls.

The following statistical analysis shows the actual odds of Scroll upgrading,
and the associated theoretical costs for each:

This example assumes the item being upgraded is a weapon with 5 upgrade
slots. Nearly all equipment and weapons have more, please adjust accordingly.

If you used all 100% scrolls, you would have a +5 Weapon Attack modifier on
the weapon. A typical 100% Weapon Attack Scroll costs 70,000 mesos. The
cost would therefore be:

5 * 70,000 mesos = 350,000 mesos

for

+5 Weapon Attack

In this example, at least three 60% scrolls have to work in order to be
comparable to five 100% scrolls. The computation is as follows:

O represents a success (0.6 probability)
X represents a failure (0.4 probability)

OOOOO (all succeed)
XOOOO OXOOO OOXOO OOOXO OOOOX (4 succeed)
XXOOO XOXOO XOOXO XOOOX OXXOO OXOXO OXOOX OOXXO OOXOX OOOXX (3 succeed)
XXXOO XXOXO XXOOX XOXXO XOXOX XOOXX OXXXO OXXOX OXOXX OOXXX (2 succeed)
OXXXX XOXXX XXOXX XXXOX XXXXO (1 succeeds)
XXXXX (all fail)

The odds of getting AT LEAST 3 successes is:

10*(.6*.6*.6*.4*.4) + 5*(.6*.6*.6*.6*.4) + (.6*.6*.6*.6*.6)
= 0.68256

or about 68.3% of the time.

Assuming the additional +3 STR and +1 Weapon Attack results in about a
150,000 meso increase in price (this is a very conservative estimate), the
estimated total cost would be:

.683 * 500,000 mesos = 341,500 mesos

for

+6 Weapon Attack
+3 STR

Per scroll: 341,500 / 5 = 68,300 mesos each

Currently, a 60% Scroll's market value is much higher than this, especially
scrolls for high-demand items (Cape, Overall, Polearm, Wand, Staff, etc.)

Finally, for comparison purposes, only one 10% scroll is necessary to make
the weapon on par with both the 60% upgraded item and the 100% upgraded item.

If you used all 10% scrolls, the odds of AT LEAST 1 scroll working can be
computed as follows:

1 - (probability that all fail) = 1 - .9^5 = 0.4095

or about 41% of the time.

Assuming the additional +3 STR and +1 Weapon Defense results in about a
150,000 meso increase in price, the estimated total cost would be:

.41 * 500,000 = 205,000 mesos

for

Weapon Attack +5
STR +3
Weapon Defense +1

Per scroll: 143,500 / 5 scrolls = 41,000 mesos each

Current market value of many 10% scrolls is LESS than the above value
of 41,000. However, 10% scrolls for high-demand items (i.e. capes, wands,
overall) can easily fetch prices of over 100k mesos. In the event you have a
10% scroll that you can't seem to get rid of, it might be in your interest to
actually go out and find/buy the appropriate weapon for that scroll and try
to upgrade it yourself. If successful, you can resell it for a premium
price, and if it fails, you can still resell it to another person
(especially if you can't use it in the first place).

Another option is to offer a higher price for the scroll (say 70k mesos), and
then as part of the deal, offer a discount (anywhere from 25% to 75%, I
prefer 50%) if the scroll fails. After you trade (and the person presumably
uses the scroll on the spot), trade again and have the person show the item
they just attempted to upgrade. If it is the same, refund the agreed upon
amount, and if not (or if they refuse to show you) then that's that, they
definitely got their money's worth. Conceivably, someone could scam you and
have two items of the same type, but it's really not worth the effort, and
the person should already appreciate that you are offering them a discount
in the first place. Use common sense and your better judgment when dealing
with people.

----------------------------------
2cii. Return Scrolls
----------------------------------

Return Scrolls are the major form of transportation around Maple Story.
Although there are taxis, there is really no practical reason once you've
visited every city. Return Scrolls have a convenience of use that taxis do
not have, and are cheaper to boot. The first thing you should do in any
town, provided you have the money, is buy at least one return scroll to that
town in the likely event you will return there.

Return scrolls will NOT WORK from Florina Beach. You must pay the 1000 meso
fee to take you there AND back.

----------------------------------
2d. Bowman Ammunition
----------------------------------

There are two kinds of ammunition: Arrow for Bow and Arrow for Crossbow.

You must have a bow or crossbow equipped in order to use each kind of arrow,
respectively. Once you have the corresponding weapon equipped, a blue box
appears around the current quiver of arrows you are using.

Every time you fire your bow/crossbow, the highlighted stack of arrows will
automatically deplete by one.

If you have no ammunition for your weapon, your bow/crossbow will not fire.
In such an instance, it is wise to have a backup weapon (Mops or Monkey
Wrenches seem to be the weapons of choice) to beat off whatever enemies
remain.

Arrows resell for 0 mesos. People often do not pick them up for this
reason. However, a Bowman who has 50 arrows remaining surrounded by Undead
Mushrooms in the Ant Tunnel would probably be happy to pay a reasonable fee
for more arrows. Arrows sell from NPCs for 1-2 mesos, depending on where you
are, and can run up quite a bill for the novice Bowman. Do your one good
deed for the day: give a newbie 500 free arrows. Especially if you do not
have a Bowman of your own.

The NPC named "Vicious" in Henesys' market district can make Arrows for you,
provided you have the appropriate materials. He can also make Bronze Arrows
and Steel Arrows, currently the only available upgraded forms of arrows.

----------------------------------
2e. Throwing Stars
----------------------------------

Throwing stars are the trademark weapon of the Claw Thief/Assassin build.
Throwing stars are ranged weapons that can only be thrown with an equipped
claw weapon. Each type of star has a corresponding stack quantity - the
number of times you can throw the star before you either have to use a
different stack or go back to town to replenish the stack.

You cannot make throwing stars, you can only pick them up from drops or buy
the most basic stars from an NPC. Thus, premium throwing stars, along with
scrolls, are some of the most valuable items in the game, with high quality
stars fetching prices upwards of 5 million mesos. Throw in massive mana
potion usage and Claw-making ingredients, and the Claw Thief becomes the most
expensive class in the game.

----------------------------------
3. Usable Item Details
----------------------------------

Below is a list of, to the author's knowledge, all usable items in Maple
Story. This list is NOT comprehensive and is subject to change as new
information comes in (and indubitably Wizet/Nexon will add items as the game \
expands).

A question mark (?) next to something indicates an uncertainty, either in
correctness or existence. If you can confirm and/or refute the thing in
question, please contact me.

Some items cannot be bought from vendors. Thus, they do not have a "real"
cost, so to speak. However, if the vendors *did* sell such an item, it would
be sold for 2 times the Player's selling price. So, if you have an item that
sells for 50,000 mesos to a vendor, its cost would be 100,000. In this
reference, I will note where I have used this formula to generate an
appropriate cost.

10% and 60% Scrolls do not have a cost, as their market value is far more
than the amount one could sell to a vendor for (a whopping 1 meso). Nor will
I speculate on the "worth" of them, because this FAQ could be obsolete one
week from now, and then I would receive a flood of emails telling me that 10%
scrolls for Pole Arms are worth 100k, not 98k "like I said in my FAQ."

This also goes for throwing stars, which are worth far far more than their
selling price. You would have to be extremely foolish to sell any star
better than Subi to a vendor.

If you find an item that contains errors, or you have addenda to an item's
"Availability," please scroll down to the "Contact the Author" section (4b)
and notify me. Your help in making this reference more complete is welcome
and will not go unnoticed. This guide is meant to help people, not mislead
them.

3c. Scrolls (Alphabetized)

NOTE: The (?) symbol next to a Scroll name means that its existence is
uncertain. The (?) symbol next to a monster name indicates that I am not
sure if this is the correct monster that drops the scroll.

If you have a scroll that is not listed here *AT ALL*, please contact me
so I can add it in. Screenshots are appreciated, as well as where you got
it.

A big thank you to Mithos of Sleepywood.net forums for compiling a similar
list long before this, much of the Availability is based solely on his Scroll

be found on the Hidden Street item database, much credit to them for nearly
all non-weapon scrolls (http://www.u8generation.com/maple/).

----------------------------------

Return Scroll to a Town
Cost: 400 mesos

Availability:
Lith Harbor, Henesys, Kerning City, Perion, Ellinia

Effect:
Returns you to the nearest town on the World Map. "Nearest" means that the
scroll will check the distance between you and the cities on the map, and
warp you to the closest one IN TERMS OF A STRAIGHT LINE. It does not check
the number of zones between the one you are on and the town. You can test
this for yourself by going to the Three-Way Fork outside Lith Harbor,
Henesys, and Kerning City. Use a Return Scroll. You will go back to Lith
Harbor, even though Henesys is fewer zones away.

4. Closing
----------------------------------

There you have it, my first attempt at an FAQ. Hopefully you got something
out of it, and thanks for reading. Happy Mapling!

----------------------------------
4a. Credits
----------------------------------

Thanks to all who supported me in my first FAQ.

Haoran -- Thank you for your support and help, I probably wouldn't have done
this if you hadn't maintained enthusiasm and supplied me with those first few
scroll details.

GreenBird -- Thank you for your contribution. AHAHAHA jk thanks for being
the person that went in on MS with me in the first place, despite your soul
being sold to RO.

Niccus -- Always my contact for kMS and jMS, he kept me posted on upcoming
things in the MS community. GlobalMS has got some ways to go, but remain
patient... great things are yet to come!

Mewtwo X9 -- Credit to him for many Availability sections, please check out
his awesome Enemy Treasure FAQ which many of you have undoubtedly already
used.

Sleepywood.net and Hidden Street -- Much info was lifted and reproduced here,
much credit goes to Mithos' Scroll Guide on the forums and Hidden Street's
item database. Please visit their sites, they contain exhaustively
researched and more comprehensive info about the entire game of MS.

Visit them at:
http://www.sleepywood.net and http://www.u8generation.com/maple/

Wizet/Nexon -- Thanks for a neato game, even if people are level 170+ in the
Japanese version.

Any and all CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is welcome. Please make sure your email

email LOOKS LIKE THIS OMGOMG YOU MISSED THIS PWND! then I will ignore it,
and if your EmAil LoOkZ lyKe DiZz L0lz it will be ignored as well.

Maple Story SN: HaricotVert

Do not give me feedback IN GAME, it too will be ignored. Like you, I play
Maple Story to have fun, not to have people badger me about this FAQ. Please
treat others as you want to be treated. This 'Golden Rule' is forgotten far
too often in MMORPGs.

----------------------------------
4c. Version History
----------------------------------

v1.0 -- First Release (12/30/04)

v1.1 -- Various errata corrected and addenda, mostly in Scrolls but also the
entire Florina Beach item list. Thanks to Motive, Greenbird, Niccus,
Mithos from Sleepywood.net forums, aero32526 [Jimmy Y.],
Mr. Squirrel, Zoilito Hipolito, lolatdc749, and Hidden Street
(http://www.u8generation.com/maple/) which contained much info about
scrolls and other items currently not available due to Beta status.
(01/06/05)

v1.2 -- Added statistical analysis of scrolls, suggestions of how to sell off
scrolls to maximize profit, addenda to effects of food and drink
relative to potions, and added a note that throwing stars are not
included in this guide. Version 0.24 patch potions included.
(02/06/05)

v1.3 -- Added "Perfect Medicine", notation that return scrolls do not work
from Florina Beach, Sniper Potion (not Warrior Potion) drops from
Curse Eyes, throwing stars by popular demand (Thanks Niccus). Full
version release of Maple Story occurs, with Ossyria and everything!
Version 1.4 is on the way, once I make it to Ossyria and check out
the stores there.
(05/16/05)
