Top 10 Questions
---------------------

1. What is the password for the Sunken Ship?
A. Pearls.

2. Where is the hidden chest in the first room of Mushroom Castle?
A. You can only get it at the beginning of the game, the first time you go
to the castle. Run after Toad, jump on his head, and then jump on the
door frame.

3. Where are the Seed and Fertilizer?
A. You get the Seed after you kill Smilax. To get the Fertilizer, walk
along the east side of Nimbus Land after you beat Valentina. You will
find a secret passage that takes you to Shy Away. He will give you the
Fertilizer.

4. Where is Grate Guy's Casino?
A. First, play the game with Knife Guy in Booster Tower until you win the
Bright Card. Then go to the circle of pipes in Bean Valley. Wait until
Shy Away waters the top plant, then kill it and go down the pipe. Kill
the Chomp Chomp and jump up three times to the left of where it used to
be. A platform will appear that takes you to the Casino.

5. Where are the cameos?
A. Link is found by sleeping in the Rose Town inn. Samus is in the guest
room of the Mushroom Castle after you beat Yaridovich. The original
Mario is behind the curtain in Booster Tower.

6. How do I do 30 jumps?
A. Push Y when Mario reaches the bottom of his jump. The rythym changes at
7-12 jumps and again at 23-25 or so. Don't worry; I can't do it either.

7. What is the easiest way to get experience?
A. When you come to a screen with a star, get it, kill as many enemies as
possible, and then die. You will keep your experience, but the star is
still there, so you can get it over and over.

8. How do I get Johnny in my party?
A. You can't get Johnny.

9. What is the Princess's ??? and what do I do with it?
A. It's between the chair and the fireplace in the Princess's room. If you
get it early in the game, you can exchange it for a Mushroom. Later,
when you have the Princess, she will just yell at you.

10. There is no tenth question. Oh well.

The Intro
---------------------

Walk through the first room and jump over the Terrapins in the next
room (since you don't get any experience). You will have to fight the group
of four in front of the door. Just use regular attacks and make sure to use
your Action Command (push A just before you hit them). Go through the door
and dodge the enemies jumping out of the lava. Cross the bridge and it will
collapse under you. Go through the door and walk up until you encounter
Bowser.
Attack Bowser with regular attacks. Push A just before he hits you
to block. After a few rounds, Princess Toadstool will tell you attack the
chain. Now cast Jump on the Kinklink. Two hits should do it. The
chandelier will fall, but Bowser will throw a hammer and knock Mario down.
Mario will beat up Bowser and rescue the Princess, but then a giant sword
falls on the castle.

Mushroom Kingdom
---------------------

Go outside Mario's house and talk to Toad. He will ask you to find
the Princess. Save the game by jumping on the Save Block. Leave Mario's Pad
and take the path up and to left to Bowser's Keep. Enter and the giant sword
will tell you that the castle now belongs to the Smithy Gang and destroys the
bridge. You will now be on Vista Hill, with no way to get back to the
castle. Go back to Mario's Pad and talk to Toad again (he's inside the
house). He will tell you to go to Mushroom Kingdom and warn the Chancellor.
Walk down the path leading outside and Toad will return. He will
knock you down and give you a Mushroom. When he asks if you know how to use
items, say "Of course I do!" and you get to keep the Mushroom. Otherwise, he
makes you use it. Toad will then tell you that Mushroom Way is filled with
monsters. A Goomba will appear. Say you know about Timed Hits and the
Goomba will run off. Toad will give you three Mushrooms and leave. Go back
inside and restore your HP by turning off the Fungi Light. Save your game
and go to the map screen. Enter Mushroom Way.
You need to fight, or you won't get any experience. Later on, you
can dodge enemies, but at this point you need experience. If you get low on
HP, return to Mario's Pad. Don't use a Mushroom except in an emergency
during a fight. Save Flower Points (this is always good advice) and whenever
you get a Lucky! Bonus Flower, always play the game. There's a 2 out of 3
chance that you at least keep the money / experience you earned. NEVER reset
the game if you die. You keep the experience you gained, and your money
isn't halved (unlike most games).
Head down and left and get all the money out of the treasure box.
The Goombas will just keep infinitely appearing from the upper right, so you
have to keep moving or you won't get anywhere. Follow the path to the next
box. Take on the Goomba terrorizing Toad and he will give you a Honey Syrup.
Continue on to the next screen.
Watch out for the Goombas running around and head to the center.
Kill the Goomba on the Spinning Flower and jump on it. When Mario is facing
left, jump to land on the ledge. Get the Flower from the treasure box
(increases your max FP by 1). Jump onto the right ledge and fight the Sky
Troopa carrying Toad. Toad will give you a Flower Tab. Head to the lower
right and open the treasure box to get a mushroom. Note: The mushrooms you
get out of treasure boxes instantly fill up the whole party's HP and your FP.
To avoid confusion with the Mushroom item, I'll call these type of mushrooms
Instant Mushrooms. Then head down and right.
Dodge the Spikeys (Spinys, actually, but they're Spikeys in the game)
that Lakitu throws and head to the right. Toad will be captured by the
Hammer Brothers. Run into the Hammer Brother for the funniest line in the
game and a fight. Use your Jump spell on one of them until he dies, then hit
the other. Heal with Mushrooms if need be. Cool trick: Hit X just as the
item disappears. You may get the message "Get a freebie!" which means you
don't use up the item! After the battle, Toad will give you the Hammer that
the Hammer Brothers left behind. Continue down the path and you will be
back on the map. Go back to Mario's Pad to heal and save (never stay at an
inn. There's no point in paying money when you go to Mario's Pad for free
healing).
Go to Mushroom Kingdom and enter. Talk to everybody and go to the
Item Shop. Buy a Shirt and equip it. If you have the money, buy Jump Shoes.
Go downstairs and talk to the person to learn about Hidden Chests. You can
get a second one here by standing on the person's head when they are in the
lower-right corner and jumping up. Save your game at the Inn (but don't stay
there) and go to the castle. Toad will greet you and go to talk to the
Chancellor. Run after him and jump on his head when he's standing in front
of the door. Then jump on top of the door frame. Jump up to find a hidden
chest with a Frog Coin. If you screw up, reset it. It isn't necessary to
get this chest, but now's the only time you can get it. Explore the castle
and go to the throne room. Mario will explain what happened to the
Chancellor. The Chancellor will give you the Map and permission to use the
treasue room. Go the treasure room and clean the place out. Then leave the
castle and you'll meet Mallow. He will go with you to get his grandfather
Frogfucius's coin back. Head to the exit and the lower right and Croco, who
stole Frogfucius's coin, will show up and escape. Go to the Item Shop and
the owner will give you a free Pick Me Up. Also buy some Pants for Mallow.
When you leave town, there will be a new location on your map:
Bandit's Way. First, go back to Mario's Pad to heal and save the game. When
you enter Bandit's Way, Croco will run off. In the lower left is a Save
Block, but you don't need it. Get Mario and Mallow up to level 3 and then
head to the lower right. On the next screen, Croco will run off again. Use
the Spinning Flower to jump onto the cliff. Jump on one block and the other
will rotate around to the other side. Cross over to the next cliff and drop
onto the Spinning Flower. When it is facing right, jump and you will find a
hidden treasure in the air, containing a very rare Kerokero Cola. Save these
for much later in the game. Note: I'm not going to mention any more hidden
treasures unless they are particularly hard to get. Consult the hidden
treasure list for them. On the next screen, chase Croco upwards, but don't
miss the Instant Mushroom in the upper-right. Jump on the platform on the
next screen and the other one will rotate. Get the chest for a Star, and
rampage through all the K-9s on the ground while you're invincible. Then
jump back on the platforms and use them to cross to the other chest, with a
Flower in it. Head south and you will chase Croco into a dead end.
Find Croco, run at him from behind, and jump on him. He will run off
again. After you jump on him the third time, you will get into a fight.
Mario should cast Fire Orb until you run out of FP, then attack. Mallow
should cast Thunderbolt or attack, and heal with Mushrooms if anybody's hurt.
When you beat Croco, he drops Frogfucius's coin and a Wallet and runs off.
A Warp trampoline appears that takes you back to the Save Block. Leave
Bandit's Way and go back to Mario's Pad to heal and save, then go to Mushroom
Kingdom.
When you arrive in Mushroom Kingdom, you'll find Shysters terrorizing
the people. Head to the lower-right and kill the Shyster next to the blue
guy. He's the guy that was missing his wallet. Give him the Wallet for a
Flower Tab. Head to the exit on the right and kill the Shyster there. The
guard will give you 10 coins. You can buy any items you need at the Item
Shop. Head left and kill the Shyster in the middle, then then one down by
Raz and Raini's house. Then go to the far left house and enter. Kill the
two groups of Shysters, then go upstairs and kill the one there. The kid's
father will give you a Flower Tab. If you need healing, the Inn is still
functional. Don't forget that your HP is restored when you go up a level.
Then head to the castle.
Take the passage to the left and go up to the Princess's room. There
is a Save Block here, and by talking to the Princess's grandmoter, you can
get free healing. Go back to the main room and head into the room on the
right. Kill the Shysters jumping around the guard. Go down the stairs into
the treasure room and take all the chests again (they've been restocked).
Head upstairs and go into the vault guard's room. Talk to him and he will
give you a Wake Up Pin for Mallow. Go back to the Princess's room to get
healed and save again. Then go to the entrance room and keep going forward
to the throne room.
You'll encounter the Shysters' leader, Mack (a giant sword), and four
of his bodyguards. The first order of business here is to kill the
Bodyguards, but if you kill them all, Mack will summon more. The trick is to
kill all but one to minimize the damage you take without letting Mack summon
any more. Have Mallow cast Thunderbolt, and then attack each one until
there's one left. Then attack Mack, having Mario use Fire Orb, and Mallow
cast Thunderbolt or heal with items. When you defeat Mack (and the remaining
Bodyguard), you'll get the first Star Piece.

Tadpole Pond
---------------------

Go the Item Shop and the owner will give you the Cricket Pie that
Mallow was sent to get. Go back to Mario's Pad and heal, then take the exit
now on the lower-right of this map to Kero Sewers. Enter and go down the
pipe.
This is the first real dungeon. Swim right and go down the pipe. Go
down the next pipe down and to the right from the pipe you came in from.
Follow the path to the next pipe and go up the stairs. Watch out for the
Rat Funks running out of the gaps in the wall. You will probably get some
Pure Water after fights; this can be used to kill any undead enemy instantly.
At the top of this screen, go down the pipe and get the Star out of the
chest. Kill The Big Boo and all the Rat Funks while you're invincible and go
down the next pipe. Follow the next passage under the columns and go down
the pipe. Jump in the water and swim to the lower-left. Enter the pipe
and head right to the chest. When you open it, you will have to fight a
very tough Pandorite. Have Mario use Jump and Mallow heal or attack. When
you beat it, you'll get a Trueform Pin. Go back to the pipe that took you
here and go through. Swim to the upper-right and go through the (invisible)
doorway between the two columns. Go through the next door and get out of the
water at one of the brown platforms. Go to the middle pipe at the top and
take it back to the entrance room. Leave and get healed, then return.
Head to the pipe on the left and go down. This time, instead of
jumping in the water, jump to the ledge above and to your right (the one with
the Rat Funk standing at the end). Kill the Rat Funk and then drop to the
ledge below you. Go down the pipe. Step on the switch to drain the water,
then jump on the trampoline to take you back outside. Immediately go back in
(don't go back to the map) and take the pipe on the left again. This time,
jump into where the water used to be and go down the pipe at the bottom
corner. Open the chest (the one you can reach) for an Instant Mushroom,
then save your game. Go down the pipe and fight Belome.
Mario should cast Jump and attack when you're out of FP. Mallow
should cast Thunderbolt and heal with Mushrooms. Belome can turn your
characters into Scarecrows, but the character with the Trueform Pin is immune
to it and can heal the other character with Able Juice. You can still use
magic while a Scarecrow. Belome will also swallow your characters. Just
keep hitting him and he'll soon drop the other character. When you beat him,
a flood will sweep you into Midas Falls.
This is a fun bonus level, and the best way to get Frog Coins. Toad
will explain what to do. Collect coins and skip the first cave. Go down the
left path, and skip both caves here (although the first time you go in each
you will get a Flower and a Frog Coin, respectively, so hit them once). Then
go down the right path for more coins. You'll now be in the barrel-jumping
section. The coins here follow a simple pattern: three sets where the coins
are on the right, then one set on the left. At the end, the operator will
exchange the coins you picked up for Frog Coins (60 coins = Frog Coin this
time. Later, it's 70 to 80 coins). He'll also give you the NokNok Shell for
Mario. Save your game and leave the screen.
On the map, go to Tadpole Pond and enter. Step on the rock near the
water and the tadpoles will appear. You'll meet Frogfucius. Cross the water
on the tadpoles and talk to Frogfucius. He will explain a lot of the story.
Afterwards, talk to him again and give him the Cricket Pie. He will give you
the Froggie Stick, a weapon for Mallow. Read the sign and then cross back
to the main area. On the left is the Juice Bar and the Frog Coin Emporium.
Save your Frog Coins for later in the game. Head east to Melody Bay. Save
your game and talk to Toadofsky. He will explain how to play music. Play
the music on Frogfucius's sign (So La Mi Re Do Re Do Re) and Toadofsky will
give you an Alto Card that allows you to buy Elixirs at the Juice Bar. Go
back to Mario's Pad to heal and save.

Geno
---------------------

Head to Rose Way (south from Tadpole Pond). Jump on the first
platform and ride it. Stand on the next one until it takes you to the next
platform. Ride this one until you get to a Flower, then get off on the next
platform and the middle stop. Jump off and go up to the next screen. Kill
the Shy Guys and use their platforms to get the chest, which contains a Frog
Coin. Go back to the main area and ride the platform all the way to the
right (jump to get a coin on the way). Watch out for the Crooks on the next
screen, which hit hard but have little HP. Follow the path back to the main
screen and get on the platform. Ride it to the left for a coin, then ride
the other platform for two more. Get back on the first platform and take it
to the right to the next screen. There are hordes of coins in the chest, but
opening them will knock the Shy Guys off. Go for it anyway; you can often
clean out the chest and run away before the Shy Guy recovers. You can always
use the experience anyway. The exit is in the lower-right. On the way out,
you will see a brief scene of Bowser talking to his troops and planning to
get his castle back.
Back on the map screen, head south to Rose Town. Talk to everybody
and go to the Item Shop to buy better armor. Go to the Inn to meet Gaz and
learn about Geno. After everything's over, stay at the Inn (it's free) and
Toad will show up to give you a Flower Tab. Talk to the guy at the bottom of
the cliff near the top. Jump on him and go up to the house. Leave the
chests alone and go upstairs to the switch. Go back outside and the guy will
give you some advice. Leave town and the Forest Maze will be on your map.
Go there.
There are free Mushrooms all over the forest, but be careful because
some are monsters. Head north. You can get coins by bouncing on the
Wiggler. Enter the tree stump like a pipe and head right. Jump on the
trampoline to leave the cave and go north. Look out for arrows falling down.
Ignore all the tree stumps; they're empty (although some have hidden chests,
consult the list) and go to the upper-left one (not the one in the middle of
the rows). Jump on the sleeping Wiggler to create a passage. Go back
outside and head north along the new path to a tree stump. Go down and
follow the path to the right and then south to the next room. Go right and
jump on the spring, which takes you to actual maze area. Save the game and
go north.
First follow the instructions given to you by the guy in Rose Town
(left, left, straight, right). These directions are given from Mario's
perspective, i.e. when you enter the screen from the right, right means going
up. You will arrive at a stump. Enter and open the chests for an Instant
Mushroom, three Flowers, and a Frog Coin! Retrace your steps to the start of
the maze and then follow Geno to the Boss. After a long sequence, you and
Geno get into a fight with Bowyer.
Bowyer will make three buttons appear. He will hit one with an arrow
and then you will not be able to use a button. Mario should attack, Mallow
should heal or attack depending on what buttons you have, and Geno should
cast Geno Beam or attack if Y is locked. When you defeat him, Geno will
explain the rest of the story and you'll get the second Star Piece. Follow
the path north and leave the maze.

Yo'ster Isle
---------------------

Return to Rose Town and talk to everybody again. Go to the Inn and
Gaz will give you the Finger Shot. Stay at the Inn to see Link if you want.
You can get the chest in the Item Shop by jumping on the boxes outside and
going down the chimney like a pipe. You can now skip the rest of this
section and go straight to Moleville if you want, but I wouldn't recommend
it.
Head to the Pipe Vault and enter. Dodge the Podoboos (the game calls
it a Sparky, but they look like Podoboos) and jump the pits. If you fall in,
you're just knocked back to the beginning. The next room has some Goombas
and a Thwomp. Climb the stairs by jumping when the Thwomp comes down. Go
down the pipe to a screen full of pipes.
The first pipe takes you down to a room full of coins that looks a
lot like something out of the original Mario (so does this whole level, and
the music, too). Pick up the coins. Run at the small gap and press down to
slide under it and collect a Frog Coin. Leave the room via trampoline and go
back down to the pipe that took you in. Enter again and jump up to make a
block appear that allows you to jump on top of the ledge and get the Flower
(and two Frog Coins in hidden chests) on top.
Go down the next-to-last pipe in the room with all the pipes and
you'll reach a Goomba-stomping game. The first times you play, you can get
a Flower Tab and a Flower Jar, then you get Frog Coins. Unfortunately, the
number of points you need to win is raised each time. Don't go over the
number of points you need to win and the number won't go up as much. Win at
least twice for the Flowers (you can come back if you're having a hard time,
but just remember to get the Flowers) and jump on the trampoline.
Go down the pipe at the end of the hall of pipes. The next two
screens are fairly straightforward. Watch out for the Nippers. They make
you lose coins. On the third screen after the pipe hall, ride the first
platform up for a flower. Ignore the chest over the second (horizontal)
platform. You'll probably fall on the Nippers. If you do, you have to move
down or you'll just keep bouncing on them. If you get into a fight with a
Pirahna Plant, you may encounter a Shy Ranger. He will always run away, but
with the Feather or Troopa Pin accessories, you can get a turn first. There
doesn't seem to be anything special about him, however (at least in the U.S.
version). The next pipe takes you to Yo'ster Isle.
Talk to Yoshi and get on so you can understand the dinosaurs. Talk
to one of the pink dinosaurs and he will give you Cookies. Take them to
Boshi (the blue guy with shades) and agree to race him. This is VERY
difficult. Be sure to use the Cookies. If you win, then you get a bunch of
cookies and can play the Yoshi racing game to win more Cookies. The Cookies
allow you to summon Yoshi in battle and get an item. You can either race
Yoshi or bet on whether Yoshi will win. I recommend betting. One of the
dinosaurs will also let you store your Cookies so you don't have to lug them
all around (you have limited item space).
Later in the game, there will be a baby Yoshi. Feed him Cookies
until he grows. Then you can get Yoshi-Ade by giving him many cookies at
once. You can even get Red Essence if you give him enough.
Take the exit to the south-east and you can now walk from the Pipe
Vault straight down to Yo'ster Isle.

Moleville
---------------------

Keep going west past the Pipe Vault to the next map and Moleville.
Explore the town and buy some new equipment (buy Work Pants instead of
standard armor. Although they aren't as strong, they raise your attack).
Head to the upper-right to see Bowser talking to his troops, then enter the
Coal Mines.
Hop on the two guys' shoulders and enter the mines. Pass through the
first room and talk to the guy. Drop down and go through the door. Take the
left turn and keep going until you encounter Pa'Mole. Talk to him and go
back to the fork. Jump on the trampoline and you will be knocked out. Croco
will show up and take your money. Chase him to the right and he will blow up
the wall. Go through the wall and keep chasing. Whenever you see one of his
henchmen, attack them and you will get a Flower Tab. After you fight all
three henchmen, go after Croco.
Croco functions basically the same as he did back in the Mushroom
Kingdom. Mario and Mallow should attack (Mallow healing when necessary), and
Geno should cast Geno Beam. After you take 250 off him, he will steal your
items, so have Mallow heal with HP Rain. After the battle, you get your
items and money back, and a bomb. Take the bomb to Pa'Mole and he will blow
open the cave-in.
Take the bottom passage and you will be hit by a mine cart, but get a
Frog Coin. Take the upper passage and get the Star. Kill all the Bob-Ombs
in this room and the next. The chest in the fourth room past the cave-in has
a lot of money, so be sure to hit it. In the fifth room, you will encounter
four Bob-Ombs on a narrow track. Run towards them and try to jump over them
and you will probably get by with only one fight. There is a Save Block and
an Instant Mushroom right behind them. The higher chest has a Flower, if you
can reach it. Try jumping from the stack of two crates.
From the Save Block, you'd probably guess there was a boss coming up,
and you'd be right. Dodge the bombs he throws and jump on Punchinello to
start the fight. Punchinello will throw four Microbombs. Have Mallow kill
these with Thunderbolt with Mario and Geno attack Punchinello. He will then
throw out four Bob-Ombs. Kill three of them and leave one alive (like you
did with Mack). Unfortunately, the bombs will probably explode and he will
summon more, but after a few hits he will throw out huge Mezzo Bombs anyway.
Don't kill any of them, and they will explode on their own. Keep attacking
Punchinello (you may want to have Geno use Geno Boost, if he has it) and he
will drop a huge bomb that crushes him. You then get the Star Piece.
In the next room, you'll encounter Dyna and Mite and get to play the
mine cart level. Press B to jump and pick up floating mushrooms. When you
use them, make sure to push Y before going into turns. You will need to use
Y on the sharper turns anyway (which you will crash on if you use a mushroom,
brake or no brake). If you crash, it just takes a second or so off your
time. Follow the way the curves on the track and you will avoid most of the
hard turns. Use mushrooms constantly on the side-scrolling sections. After
the mine cart, you'll wind up back in Moleville.

Booster
---------------------

When you leave Dyna's house, you will encounter a group of Snifits
working for Booster, who then run off. Explore Moleville again and you'll
find some new stores. One of the stores allows you to buy bombs by trading
in your healing items for points. There's also a rare items store that you
should check occasionally. Always buy anything offered there. Right now,
you can get a Lucky Jewel that will let you play the Lucky! game after any
fight you use it in. You can also buy some fireworks for the rip-off price
of 500 coins. You can trade the fireworks for a Shiny Stone, and the Shiny
Stone for a Carbo Cookie. If you give the Carbo Cookie to the mole on the
far lower-left, you can use the bucket as a pipe to play Midas River and keep
all the coins you get. Don't; it's not worth it. You will need a Shiny
Stone later on, though. You can also replay the Moleville Mountain game for
10 coins and wager on getting a better time for 30 coins. This level is a
great way to pick up coins in the side-scrolling sections.
Once you're done in the town, go back into the mines and go to the
screen where Pa'Mole was to learn the Moleville Blues. Return to Melody Bay
in Tadpole Pond and you'll find Toadofsky again. Play the Moleville Blues
(Mi Do So Do Re La Ti Do) and he'll give you a Tenor Card that allows you to
buy Megalixirs at the Juice Bar. Now go to Booster Pass near Moleville.
Dodge the Spikesters thrown by Lakitu and head up the steps on the
cliff. On the next screen, head right for a Flower, then walk into the gap
in the cliffs. Jump up and all the holes with Spikesters will be plugged up.
Keep going and you're back on the map again. That's it.
Go to Booster Tower, where you'll find the Princess held captive by
Booster and Bowser. Bowser will join you. Go back to Moleville and buy him
some Work Pants before you enter the tower. In the tower, climb up the
stairs and memorize the order of the pictures of Booster's ancestors, then go
through the door. Avoid the endless cascade of Spookums and go through the
next door. Booster will show up on his train and then leave. Follow the
train track all the way into the right (into the wall) for a Flower Tab, then
use the normal exit. Go up the stairs by hugging the right wall and jumping
the Rob-Ombs, and take the right exit. This part is a little tricky. You
have to fall down and land on the catapult. Use the squares on the floor as
a guide. The catapult is located one square down and right from the
bottom-left edge of the ledge. It will take many tries, but it's worth it.
Inside the chest is the powerful Masher for Mario.
Now take the left exit. Step on the switch to open a secret room in
Booster Pass. In the next room, you can walk behind the curtain to turn
Mario into the original Mario. He turns back to normal when you go through
the door. You can only do this once per game. In the next room, you can
dodge the Spookums on the ledges by standing on the edges. You can avoid the
Bullet Bills (which are actually Blasters) the same way, or kill the Snifit
shooting them. Go up the stairs to reach a Save Block.
In the next room, look at the portraits in the correct order to get
the Elder Key. The correct order is portrait 6, 5, 3, 1, 2, 4. Open the
door with the locked key to get the Chomp for Bowser. Keep going in the main
hall to get an Instant Mushroom. Jump on the catapult to launch yourself up
to the next level. Walk to the far left edge of the ledge you're on and jump
across the gap. Next, jump onto the orange block and then the ledge with the
second Spookum. Jump onto the path patrolled by the third Spookum and walk
into the door to get a Frog Coin. Go up the stairs to a room with a pile of
coins. Get only the Frog Coins, because there are a lot of fights in here
(they are pretty easy, but are annoying). Get the key and go into the door
to get Zoom Shoes. Give them to Bowser. You can easily jump over the Chomps
in the next room.
Booster will show up again and throw bombs at you. You can just walk
out of the way. Go up the stairs and save your game. There is a hidden
chest on top of the normal chest in this room. It contains the Goodie Bag,
which gives you money when you use it in a fight. The next room is Booster's
room. Try to free Toadstool and Booster will show up. The Snifits will
check behind the curtains. Hide between one they aren't looking behind. At
first there is only one Snifit, but the other two will help later. If you
avoid them, you won't have to fight Booster. Knock down the Mario doll by
jumping and Booster will give you the Amulet, which raises your attack. Go
out the door and you will encounter the Knife Guy and the Grate Guy.
Attack the Knife Guy first. Mario should attack or use Super Jump,
Mallow should heal or attack, Geno should cast Geno Boost on Mario, Bowser,
himself, and Mallow (in that order, excluding the one you aren't using) and
then attack with Geno Beam, and Bowser should attack. At some point, Knife
Guy will stand on Grate Guy, and Grate Guy will use Meteor Storm. Just keep
attacking Knife Guy. Grate Guy's multi-colored ball attack will put
characters to sleep. Don't worry about healing them. Keep fighting normally
and they will soon wake up. The best party for this battle is probably
Mario, Mallow, and Bowser. After the battle, you will chase Booster to
Booster Hill.
This is another bonus level. Jump on the barrels to propel yourself
forward and catch up with Booster to earn Flowers. Don't even bother trying
to jump on the Snifits. You'll probably just end up getting hit. After
Booster Hill, you end up in Marrymore, but first go back to Booster Pass.
You can also go to Booster Hill again to earn more Flowers. Toad will tell
you to leave, but you can just run up the hill and get Flowers. In Booster
Pass, head to the upper right and go into the new cave that has appeared.
Jump over the Spinys and open the chests for a Kerokero Cola, a Flower, and a
Frog Coin. You will encounter an apprentice Snifit here. If you lose to
him, he runs off to become Snifit #4.
Go to Marrymore and head to the Hotel. Buy better equipment, but
save 200 coins. Also, the Masher is better than the Super Hammer, the Chomp
is better than the Chomp Shell, and Work Pants are better than the Happy
Shell, so don't buy any of those. Stay at the Suite to get a Flower Tab and
a Max Mushroom. If you stay several times, you can get some more Flower
items. You can sleep several times at one stay by turning the light off. If
you stay too many times, the hotel manager will put you work to pay off your
debt. This accomplishes nothing, however.
Head to the top of the town and talk to Raz and Raini. Try to enter
and the Snifit will tell you about the back entrance. Walk around behind the
right pillar and then head down to enter the invisible back door. Go
downstairs and talk to Chef Torte. Go upstairs and help Snifit 1 break down
the door by running into it at the same time he does. It make take a while.
Save your game and break down the next door in the same way.
After the dialogue, you will have to pick up the Princess's stuff.
Run after the Snifits and talk to them to get it back. To get the Crown,
jump on Booster's head and walk around until you pick it up. Then talk to
the Princess. If you don't make it in time, it doesn't really matter.
You'll now have to fight Chef Torte and his cake.
Ignore the turtles and attack Bundt (the cake). After you take 800
off it, the chefs run and you have to blow out the candles. Do this by
constantly attacking it. Heal only if absolutely necessary or the candles
will start relighting. After you blow out all the candles, you fight the
bottom half (Raspberry). Raspberry doesn't have much HP, so just pound him
with basically anything (besides magic) until this strange sequence ends.
Princess Toadstool then joins your party.

Star Hill
---------------------

Leave town and you will automatically return to the Mushroom Kingdom.
Talk to the guy whose wallet you found to get a Frog Coin, then go to the
castle. Toadstool will leave the party (temporarily) and the Chancellor will
ask you to stop Smithy. Leave the castle and the Princess will join again.
Go to Tadpole Pond and talk to Frogfucius. He will send you to Star Hill.
Go to Star Hill (west from Marrymore) and enter. Walk up to the left
flower and talk to it to open the gate. Enter. Explore and talk to all the
smiling stars. You'll find about a wish Frogfucius has (and one of Mallow's,
too). Remember it. Talk to all the flowers to turn them yellow. When
you've turned all the flowers yellow, the Star Gate opens. Go through.
Talk to all the flowers in the next scene the same way (and find Mallow's
parents' wish). In the next scene, flip all the flowers and then get the
Star in the upper-right. Go through the Star Gate and you're back on the
map. Yup. That's it. No boss, no nothing. That's the whole level.

Johnny
---------------------

Head down to Seaside Town. You'll notice the townspeople are acting
strange. If you go to the Item Shop, you can buy some strange items. Buy
them now if you want them, because you won't be able to buy them later.
Go to the Elder's house at the top and talk to him. Go upstairs and you can
buy some great items with Frog Coins. Save them up for the Scrooge Ring,
which you will need at the end of the game.
Leave town and head down to the Sea. Talk to the ghost in the second
room and he will sell you items and equipment. Take the bottom passage and
drop down to the chest, which contains a Star. Kill all the Zeostars in this
room and the next, then walk where the left wall meets the upper wall.
There's a near-invisbile door there that will let you get a Flower, a Frog
Coin, and an Instant Mushroom. Head back out of the room and continue south.
Jump in the whirlpool and go into the underwater cave. Get in the bubbles
and shoot up to a Max Mushroom. Drop down and walk outside. Go into the
whirlpool and jump on the ship. Go down the pipe on its top.
You can now leave and come back to the Sunken Ship right here. Go
into the door on the right to save, then take the left door. Read any pieces
of the log that you find. You will get lots of Pure Water in here. It isn't
very useful, but you can make a lot of money selling it (you get 75 coins per
Pure Water), and money is hard to come by at this stage of the game.
Follow the passage in the door on the left to the next room. You
will encounter Dry Bones. If you get into a fight, the only way to kill him
is to cast a spell on him. This causes him to die instantly. However, the
Dry Bones will continue walking around on the main screen, so you just have
to avoid them. Keep going and descend the stairs. Get the chest for money,
and then continue to the puzzle part. You may want to skip this section of
the walkthrough if you want to solve the puzzle for yourself.
In the first room, just keep entering until the Koopa Paratroopa
knocks the cannonball onto the switch. You get a clue and an Instant
Mushroom. In the second room, stop the trampolines so they line up with the
switch boxes. You'll get a clue and a Flower. Skip the third room entirely.
It can't be done. The door at the end of the hall leads to a money chest and
the ghost from the Sea again, selling the same stuff. Drop down and take the
bottom door. In the fourth room, follow the spinning coin and pick up all
the coins it drops. Be sure to do this room, because you get over 100 coins
by completing it succesfully. In the fifth room, hit the low block, then
jump at the cannonballs to knock them into the switches. The sixth room is
at the end of the hall. Knock a barrel down by jumping on it, then roll it
onto the bottom switch by jumping on its bottom half. You'll get an Instant
Mushroom and the final clue. Save your game and go into the next room. The
answer is PEARLS.
Head north and you'll fight King Calamari. First, you have to fight
his Tentacles. Save your FP for Calamari and just use regular attacks (they
only have 200 HP, anyway). They will toss you off the screen, which causes
fear and removes you temporarily from the battle. After 2 sets of 3 each,
you'll fight Calamari and 2 more Tentacles. Kill the Tentacles first (they
won't regenerate) and then attack Calamari with regular attacks. Mallow and
the Princess should heal, and Geno should cast Geno Boost. After you win
(he isn't that hard), you'll be in the next section of the ship.
Climb up the boxes in the second room to the higher door. Dodge the
Bullet Bills or cross by jumping on the cannons (you have to kill the rats).
I recommend just dodging them. Go down the stairs and into the next room.
Jump from the barrels in the upper-right corner onto the ledge with the two
chests for a lot of money. Take the door by the barrels and you will
encounter a clone of yourself. Jump over it and keep going out of the room
and the next. Walk behind the stack of blocks and push along the wall to
find a secret room with a Frog Coin, then go down the steps. Save your game,
and open the chest if you want. You'll have to fight Hidon, who will summon
Goombettes. Use the old leave-one strategy and pound on Hidon with weapons
(magic won't work). If you win, you'll get the Safety Badge, but this is
optional (and difficult). The Princess's healing ability is very useful
here, and on all bosses.
Head north two screens and jump in the water. Go south for four easy
Frog Coins, then go north and down the steps. Head north and walk behind the
barrels into a secret room with the Safety Ring, which protects you from
death attacks. Give it to the Princess, since she has the reviving spell
(later in the game). Climb out of the water and swim to the upper-left for
a Frog Coin, then take the exit in the upper-right.
You'll have to fight four easy Bandana Reds. Get the Instant
Mushroom and chase them. Fight five more Bandana Reds and go into Johnny's
room. He and four Bandana Blues attack. Kill the Blues first (they won't
regenerate) and then attack Johnny. Use regular attacks and keep Mario
healed. After you hit him for a while, he will challenge Mario one-on-one.
Just keep attacking and healing with Mid Mushrooms (available from the
ghost), and make sure you have the Sailor Shirt. After you win, you get the
Star. Use the trampoline in the back room to leave.
Head somewhere other than Seaside Town to heal, then go to Seaside.
The Elder will tell you to hand over the Star. Give it to him, then head to
the beach to the left. Johnny will show up and prevent Yaridovich from
escaping. You will then get into a fight. Mario should attack, Mallow (if
he's in your party from some reason; he's almost worthless) should heal or
use Shocker, Geno should cast Geno Boost and then attack with his best spell,
Bowser should attack, and Toadstool should heal or revive dead characters.
When Yaridovich uses his Mirage Attack, attack the Yaridovich with the lower
HP (this would be the one that attacked immediately after the Mirage). It
only takes a few hits to kill the fake Yaridovich.
After the battle, read Johnny's note and take the key. Use it to
open the previously-locked building and free the real townspeople. The Elder
will give you a Flower Box.

Monstro Town
---------------------

You can now buy lots of stuff in Seaside. You can also play the
Beetle Race bonus game, which is a total rip-off. Talk to the Elder and he
will tell you to go to Monstro Town on the edge of the world.
Before you go to Land's End, there a few other things to do. Go to
Moleville and you can buy the Mystery Egg. If you equip the Princess with
the B'tub Ring (available in Marrymore) and use the Egg in battle 10 times,
you get the Lamb's Lure, which causes any enemy to run. Keep using the Lure,
and you get the Sheep Attack, which does the same thing to all enemies.
Also, if you go back to the castle, you can find Samus in the guest bedroom,
but this doesn't accomplish anything.
Go to Land's End and jump in the Pot Cannon. Just as it dings, push
B to jump out onto the ledge. It may take several tries. If you stand on
the far left of the moving platform and jump up as it reaches its highest
point, you can find a hidden treasure. On the next screen, use the cannon
the same way to land in a pit and release three Chows. Kill them and jump
around next to the pit to make a block appear. Shoot onto the block via the
Pot Cannon and ride it onto the upper ledge. Open the chest for a Frog Coin,
and there's a hidden chest in the upper-left of the ledge. Keep going to the
next screen. Dodge the Geckits shooting out of the cannons and jump across.
It's better to get into a fight than fall down, however. If you do fall,
there's a Pot Cannon in the lower-left.
You'll now be in the grass section. Save your game and head to the
right around the cliffs to the next screen. You'll now be at Sky Bridge
(albeit under it). Walk up to the large gap in the cliff and jump in. Get
the Frog Coin in the chest and follow the path until you come to some
barrels. Push the barrel down, then drop down and get the Instant Mushroom.
Step on the trampoline to warp to the Kero Sewers. Jump across on the
platforms to the previously-unreachable chest, which contains Cricket Jam.
If you give it to Frogfucius, he'll reward you with 10 Frog Coins. Return to
Land's End and go back to the first grass screen.
Use the Spinning Flowers to ascend the cliff. Keep going and you'll
arrive at Sky Bridge. This area is a great way to rack up Frog Coins. Play
the Expert course and make the simple jumps (you can stand on the Bullet
Bills if need be) for a Frog Coin. Don't choose to try to double your
winnings; it only costs 5 coins anyway. Once you're done here (you can
always come back fairly easily), head north to the desert section.
Talk to the rat and he will give you instructions. Take the left
path and go down the whirlpool with the Shogun in it. You can make the
Shogun disappear by walking up to the whirlpool and backing away when it
jumps out. You can now quickly run in without a fight. After two screens
(if you mess up, you'll go back one screen), the Shogun will switch holes.
At this point, it's better just to fight or you'll be trying a long time.
After one switching screen, you'll reach the edge of the world. Remember
this location, because you'll be coming back. Go down the last whirlpool
(just follow one whirlpool rather than running back and forth) and you'll be
in the underground section.
Open the chest for a Star and rampage through the Geckits and Chows
to a hole. Jump in and walk behind the wall. A guy will sell you a Star for
400 coins. If you have the money, buy it and use it to kill all the Geckits.
Go through the door to the Temple of Belome.
In the Temple, and sometimes in Land's End, you'll see a green cloud
flying around. Jump into it and you will fight Mokuku. Use any spell on him
and he will appear, and then you can hit him. All you get is a piddly amount
of experience for beating him, but sometimes you will get Kerokero Cola or
Royal Syrup.
In the second room, open the chest for 50 coins and use it to get
your fortune told. Hit the faces in order from right to left, and when you
go down the pipe in the next room, you'll get 100 coins. In the room after
that is more money and a Frog Coin. In the next room, hit the face to
receive a fortune. If it says Belome is hungry, go down on the tile to fight
him. Otherwise, leave and keep trying.
Belome is stronger than when you last met him (I should hope so). He
will create clones of your characters. Attack Belome or use spells that hit
everybody to kill the clones. Mario should attack or use Ultra Jump, Mallow
should use Thunderbolt or Snowy, Geno should use Geno Boost or attack and
cast Geno Blast, Bowser should attack, and Toadstool should heal or attack.
After the battle, step on the switch and go down the pipe to Monstro Town
(finally!)
Go in the first door and talk to Monstermama. She will send you
upstairs to see the star. Try to remember the tune. Sergeant Flutter will
then show up and Monstermama will ask him to take you to Bean Valley. Now
you can explore the town. The Save Block is in a small hole in the far
right, next to the exit to the map screen (so you don't have to hike all the
way through Land's End).
In the second door, talk to the Thwomp several times and he will
knock down the Temple Key. If you give the Key to Belome in the Temple of
Belome (when you get the "Sorry, I won't accept visitors past my bedtime"
message), you can get hordes of items. In the third door, which you can open
with the Shiny Stone, you'll encounter Culex from one of the FFs that never
made it out here, who is very difficult (harder than Smithy). You can't beat
him at this stage in the game. On the top level is Jinx's Dojo. You can't
do anything at this point here, either. Buy a Spiked Link for Bowser in the
Weapon and Armor Shop (but don't get the Courage Shell; it's weaker than Work
Pants). There are also citizens that tell you your record for consecutive
Super Jumps (Super Jumps only, not Ultra Jumps), and how many hidden chests
you have left to find.
Leave town and go back to Tadpole Pond. Play the star's song at
Melody Bay. If you only get part of it right, the notes you got right stay
there, so you can do it in parts. The tadpole near the entrance to Melody
Bay will give you the first part. If you really need help, it's La Ti Do Re
So Do Re Mi. Toadofsky will then give you a Soprano Card, which allows you
to buy Kerokero Cola at the Juice Bar. Also give Frogfucius the Cricket Jam
while you're here if you haven't yet. You may have enough Frog Coins now to
buy the Scrooge Ring. If you do, get it. I would then recommend the Exp.
Booster, but you can get whatever you want once you have the Scrooge Ring.
Go to the fifth door and sleep. The three Musty Fears will show up
and each will hide a flag. After you wake up, you have to get the flags. If
you want to cheat, Greaper's Flag is behind the sign in Rose Town, Dry
Bones's Flag is under Mario's bed, and The Big Boo's Flag is between the O
and the A on Yo'ster Island. Once you have them, go back to the room and
sleep. They will give you the Ghost Medal, which counts as defending when
you're attacking (the damage you take is reduced).
Now go to the Edge of the World cliffs in Land's End. Sergeant
Flutter will show up. You have to climb the cliffs by jumping on the Sky
Troopa shells. The easiest way is to step from one to another, but to get
the best time, you have to jump. If your time is under 14 seconds, Flutter
will give you a Frog Coin. If you manage to make it under 12 seconds, you
get the Troopa Pin, which raises your speed by 20, and Frog Coins on later
times. Then head north to Bean Valley.
You may first want to make a side trip back to Booster Tower. On the
second set of stairs, you'll find Knife Guy. He will juggle balls and you
have to guess which hand the yellow ball is in, which moves back and forth.
If he stops while the ball is in the air, guess the hand that it was moving
towards. Mostly, he will give you Wilt Shrooms, Rotten Mushes, and regular
Mushrooms, but occasionally he will give you a Max Mushroom. Keep playing
until he gives you the Bright Card. This will allow you to enter the
upcoming Grate Guy Casino.
In Bean Valley, take the pipe on the right. Go through the next pipe
and then head down into another pipe. Get the chest for a Flower and go back
through the pipe. Head up to the next screen. Wait until the Shy Away
waters the first Pirahna Plant, then kill it and go down the pipe. Walk over
to the Chomp Chomp and kill it. Walk to the left of where it was and jump up
three times. A platform will appear. Jump up on it and go out the new exit.
You'll be back on the map with a new location: the secret Grate Guy's
Casino. Go there and you can play a slot machine and Blackjack. You can win
Frog Coins from both, but they're throw-the-controller-through-the-TV hard,
especially Blackjack (the computer cheats). Talk to Grate Guy several times
and he will offer to play Look-the-Other-Way with you. Mostly, you get junk,
but if you win several times, you can get some good items (including Red
Essence). If you win 100 times, you get the Star Egg, which damages all
enemies when you use it, and it can be used an infinite number of times. You
can sell the Bright Card in Marrymore for Frog Coins, if you want, but I
wouldn't recommend it (you can always buy it back, though). The other pipes
in Bean Valley contain some slot machine chests that may give you an Instant
Mushroom, a Flower, or Rock Candy (stars), but nothing really special.
They're worth getting, however.
Save your game and head north from the pipe circle. Make sure the
Princess is in your party, and equip her with the Trueform Pin. Jump on the
Pirahna Plant to fight Smilax. Mario should attack or use Super Jump, Mallow
(don't use him) should cast Snowy, Geno should use Geno Boost, attack, or
cast Geno Blast, Bowser should attack (like he can do anything else), and the
Princess should heal with Group Hug and Come Back or attack if everybody's
healed. After you kill the first head (easy), he will regenerate with two,
then three. Attack each head individually. After the three heads, he will
come back with two heads and a big head. Kill the small heads first with
spells that hit everybody, then go for the big head. Smilax will cast Petal
Blast, which mushrooms the party (unless you have Trueform Pins). Group Hug
will heal this and sleep, caused by Pollen Nap. You could also give Trueform
Pins to everybody, but you only really have to give it to the Princess.
After you beat Smilax, Shy Away will fly off and drop a Seed. Take
it and go down the pipe. Hit the block to grow a beanstalk (this is a Mario
game, after all). Hit it again to climb it. Nimbus Land will appear on your
map.

Nimbus Land
---------------------

Climb the vines and jump between them. Don't worry about collecting
the coins; they aren't that important. You can get the Frog Coin if you want
it by jumping down and left from the last vine. On the next screen, go up
the red vine first to get a Flower, then take the vine on the right. The
next paragraph is optional. If you aren't good at jumping, just skip it.
Jump down and left to the orange vine and climb up to the next
screen. Climb the low vine and jump to the right one. Jump down to the
short orange one and jump straight up to reveal a platform. Go back to the
vine on the right and jump on the platform. You now have to jump to the vine
on the left. Without the platform, it's impossible. Even with the platform,
it's difficult. At the top is a Frog Coin and the Rare Scarf. Fall down the
hole for two Flowers, then drop down to the entrance to the Hot Springs.
>From there, jump on the trampoline to go to Nimbus Land.
If you didn't take the Rare Scarf route, go up the vine on the right
on the second screen. Kill the Birdy to turn him into a platform, then go up
the vine to the entrance to Nimbus Land.
Jump on the bottom of the two trampolines to go back to the map
screen, so you don't have to go back through Bean Valley. Then use the top
trampoline to enter the actual town. You'll meet Valentina and "Prince
Mallow." Explore the town and buy new equipment, then head to the upper-left
house, Garro the sculptor's. Look at the statue of King Nimbus (the one that
looks like Mallow) and you will find out that Mallow is the real Prince
Mallow. Garro will then disguise you as a sculpture to get into the castle.
Head north and save the game. Dodo will show up to check the
statues. When he pecks at you, jump. When he leaves, he will come back for
one last peck, so watch out. Afterwards, head north and pick up the Feather
he dropped, which gives you +20 Speed. You can now leave the castle if you
want.
Head left from the entrance room for a Flower, then go up into the
room with four doors. Go left and follow the passage to the next room. Get
the Flower and take the right door for another flower. Take the door on the
left and follow the passage until you come to a room with a bunch of
Nimbusians. Talk to them to get the master keys and a Flower Jar. Save the
game and take middle door in the room with three doors. Talk to the egg and
agree to play with it. Hit it a couple of times and Birdo will appear.
Mario should attack, Mallow should attack or heal, Geno should use
Geno Boost and then attack, Bowser should attack, and Toadstool should heal
and attack. Don't use spells on her because they hardly do any damage.
After you win, you get Castle Key 2. Go back outside to save and heal. Buy
Fuzzy Pants for Mallow if you didn't before. Mallow will need the defense.
Head through the door behind Birdo and kill the Pinwheel to keep
yourself from being blown off. Go through the next door and read the sign
outside King Nimbus's bedroom. Head north to the throne room. Valentina,
Shy Away, and Dodo will escape. Go through the door after them. Save your
game and follow the passage until you find a floating chest. Jump up
underneath to make a platform appear. Get the Star in the chest and run
through all the Bluebirds and Dodo. At the end, you will fall down to the
Hot Springs.
Go somewhere besides Nimbus Land to heal and save, then go to Nimbus.
Valentina will show up and you will get into a fight. Dodo will grab Mallow
and you have to fight him with only Mallow. Just attack (it's impossible to
use magic because he keeps using Flutter Hush) and heal with mushrooms. He
only has about 450 HP. Afterwards, you switch back to Mario and your other
character fighting Valentina. Dodo and Mallow will show up again in a few
turns. Attack Dodo first to get rid of him. It only takes a few hits.
Afterwards, Valentina and Dodo will escape. Mallow will get the key and free
his parents. After some dialogue, the King and Queen will tell you to go to
Barrel Volcano to find a Star Piece.
Explore the town and castle. The chest that used to have the Star
gives you a Flower. In the room where the King was held, you'll find the
guard that gave you the key, and he will give you a Flower Jar. There is one
guy who mentions how they used to have fireworks and some guy in Moleville
made them. It seems like something should happen if you bring him Fireworks,
but nothing does. One of the people in Moleville mentions that the fireworks
guy is working on a new masterpiece, and that you ought to buy some to
encourage him. If you do, then the fireworks in the ending will change. In
the upper-right house of Nimbus, you'll find Croco, who will drop a Signal
Ring that signals when you're in a screen with a hidden treasure.
Walk along the right side of the town until you walk out into space.
Talk to Shy Away and he will escape, but drop the Fertilizer. Take the Seed
and Fertilizer to the old guy in Rose Town and he will grow a beanstalk.
Climb up it and you will find a chest with two Lazy Shells, one a weapon and
the other armor. The weapon one is the best weapon for Mario, and the armor
takes your attack down by 50, but has a ridiculous defense and makes you
immune to magic! It's basically cheating to use them (except on Culex).
Go back to Nimbus Land and go to the Hot Springs. Mallow will get
you in. Heal in the Springs and jump down to the Barrel Volcano. Go down
and use the almost-invisible platforms to jump across to reach the south exit
and two Flowers. Then head north. You'll encounter Vomers, which are like
Dry Bones: you have to kill them with magic. The next chests have a Flower
and money, followed by a Star that allows you to kill all the Oerlikons and
the Corkpedite in the next room. When you fight Corkpedites, kill the Body
first and the Corkpedite will die; otherwise the Body will use Migraine.
Keep going until you find a Frog Coin floating over the lava. Get it by
jumping out over the lava and being knocked back to the ground. Then
continue north.
Jump across the pits and dodge the Pyrospheres. You can get the Frog
Coin over the door by continuing on to the next room, then backtracking to
here. Jump in the lava and you will be knocked onto the door frame. In the
next room, get the Frog Coins over the Donut Blocks (by the end of this
level, you should have enough Frog Coins for the Scrooge Ring and Exp.
Booster, and possibly the Coin Trick). Continue on to a Save Block and some
more chests.
Head east past two Stumpers and a Corkpedite until you encounter
Hinopio. He will take you into his shop, where you can buy better armor,
rest at the inn, and buy items if you need them. Also check out his model
Arwing in the back. The other two are cars from F-Zero. On the east side of
Hino Mart is a Save Block, followed by a series of tough jumps on collasping
Donut Blocks. After that, you fight the Czar Dragon.
Mario should attack, Mallow shouldn't be used, but if you have him,
should cast Star Rain or heal, Geno should cast Geno Boost, then attack,
Bowser should attack, and Toadstool should heal or attack. The Czar Dragon
will summon Helios, which are like mini Bob-Ombs. Don't attack them; they
will just explode on their turn anyway. After you beat him, he returns as
Zombone. Use the same strategy on him and he will die permanently.
Go back to Hino Mart to rest and save, because it ain't over yet.
When you get the Star Piece, the Power, er, Axem Rangers show up and steal
it. Chase them up to the Blade, but make sure you have the Princess in your
party, and equip her with the Trueform Pin. I also recommend Geno.
Attack the Pink Ranger first, because she can use Petal Blast and
turn you into Mushrooms. Spells that hit everybody are very useful here, as
is Geno Boost (that's why you should have Geno). They get lots of turns, so
heal whenever possible. After you kill Pink, go for Black, Green, and
finally Yellow. You can't kill the Red Ranger until you've beaten the
others. After you beat all the Rangers, you have to fight their Megazord, I
mean, the Blade. It will use two turns to charge up its Breaker Beam, then
attack. That's all it does, so just keep pounding on it and using Group Hug
to heal when it uses the Breaker Beam. It only takes a few hits, and then
the Blade blows up. You get the Star Piece.

Bowser's Keep
---------------------

Return to Nimbus Land and talk to the King and Queen. They will tell
you to take the Royal Bus to Bowser's Keep. Go to the bus stop west of town
and ride the strange-looking Royal Bus to Bowser's Keep. You can now walk
from Vista Hill to Bowser's Keep (apparently the bridge got fixed somehow).
Before you enter Bowser's Keep, go back to Monstro Town. Enter
Jinx's Dojo and fight Jagger. He isn't that hard. After that, his sensei
Jinx (a little plant guy) will show up and challenge you. Mario should
attack, Mallow should go home (get the idea he's prettty worthless yet?) but
if you're using him should attack or cast Star Rain, Geno should use Geno
Boost and attack, Bowser should attack, and the Princess should attack and
heal (you will NEED the Princess). The Frying Pan for the Princess may be
available in the Treasure Shop in Moleville; this will make her stronger than
Mario! If you beat him three times, he will rename the dojo Mario Style Dojo
and give you the Jinx Belt.
Go to Bowser's Keep and head north through familiar territory. If
you put Bowser in your party, he will cause most of the enemies to run. Go
into the Bowser statue at the end of the hall that had the chandeliers in it,
and then into a dark room. Take the left passage for an Instant Mushroom,
watching out for the Goombas that run out from behind the statues. Go right
and follow the path to a Save Block. Walk into the narrow protusion of floor
behind the pillars to the left to enter a secret room with two chests: an
Instant Mushroom and a lot of moolah. Leave the room and talk to Croco.
He'll sell you items and the Fire armor; but if you didn't get the Fire gear
back in the Barrel Volcano, don't buy it now. There's better armor coming up
soon. Go through the door and you'll reach the dreaded six doors.
There are two combat courses, two puzzle courses, and two action
courses. While the puzzles courses are the most fun, they only give you puny
Rock Candy as a reward, so take the other courses for good weapons. The two
combat courses are straightforward, and you'll get the Star Gun, Geno's best
weapon, and the Mega Slap, a good weapon for Toadstool (but not nearly as
good as the Frying Pan). In both of the action courses, go slowly and don't
bother with the chests. The action courses give you the Drill Claw and the
Sonic Cymbals, the best weapons for Mallow and Bowser.
After you complete four doors, you'll fall down to a Save Block. In
the next room, you'll encounter Magikoopa. Mario and the Princess should
attack (the Princess heals if need be), and Geno should cast Geno Boost and
then attack. When Magikoopa summons enemies, you'll have to kill them off
before you can hit Magikoopa. After you beat him, he returns to normal and
creates an infinite money golden treasure chest and heals you. In the room
on the left, you'll meet Croco, who will sell the best armor in the game.
You shouldn't have any trouble buying it, since the gold chest is right
outside. After you're done buying stuff, save your game and take the right
door. Jump the Bullet Bills, which are actually Big Berthas (I thought Big
Bertha was a fish) and run under the Thwomps. Nothing bad happens if a
Thwomp falls on you. Go through the next door and you'll encounter the next
boss.
Boomer is a fairly average boss. Mario should attack, Mallow should
heal or attack, Geno should Geno Boost everybody and then attack, Bowser
should attack, and the Princess should attack and heal if necessary. He will
change colors from red to blue, but it doesn't change the battle a whole lot.
After you beat him, the Chandeli-Ho will take you to the top floor.
You now immediately are fighting Exor, the sword (Note: He is NOT
Smithy. A lot of people seem to think he is). The Eyes can protect him and
he won't take any damage until you kill the protecting eye (you don't know
which one it is unless only one eye is alive). Use spells that hit everybody
to knock out the eyes (the Scrooge Ring helps a lot in this respect), and
when "Exor's protection gone" appears, attack Exor. The easiest way is to
just use Geno Whirl on Exor and it kills him. Ignore the Neosquid (mouth),
because it and the eyes will just regenerate. If you have Geno (you should),
use Geno Boost. Exor is one of the hardest boss in the game. After you beat
him, he sucks you into him and you end up in Smithy's world.
The first thing to do here is leave. Now it's time to do anything
you haven't done earlier. If you go to the Mushroom Kingdom, the kid in the
Inn will sell you his Game Boy for 500 coins. This gives you a new command
on the menu: Game, which lets you play a bonus game. The object is to shoot
shells and not get hit. If you're hit, push Y repeatedly to get back up.
Every time you are hit, it takes more presses of Y to get back up, until you
can't press Y enough times in 3 seconds and you die. To score high, shoot
shells so that the orange stars from their explosion blow up other stars and
double their point value. If you do well (by cheating with a controller with
Auto), hearts may fall down. There's no reward for getting a high score (as
far as I can see), but it's a fun little game if you're getting bored.
Then there's Culex. If you equip the Lazy Shell armor on the
Princess, all you have to do is keep healing until Culex and the crystals run
out of FP, then revive Mario (who should have the Lazy Shell weapon) and
attack Culex. When you kill him, all the crystals blow up and he gives you
the Quartz Charm, which doubles your attack power. Of course, using the Lazy
Shells is kind of cheating, but it's really the only way to beat him.
There's also a dog in Monstro Town who will give you the Attack Scarf
if you do 30 Super Jumps in a row and the Super Jacket if you do 100 jumps.
This is very difficult. Don't try to get into a rythym because Mario changes
his pattern. There's also a chest in another room that keeps track of how
many secret chests you have remaining. There are 38 of them, but 1 is in the
Factory. You don't get anything for finding them all, but some have Red
Essence or other good stuff. If you need help finding them, use the Signal
Ring or consult the list near the end of this file.
Back in the Factory, jump on the screw to move it. If you fall down,
you'll do it over. Save the game and use the screws to go to the lower-right
platform. Jump on the forward part of the screw or it will move backwards.
On the next screen, step on the switch to make a bridge and cross it. When
you fight Ameboids, use your strongest fighter on them, because if you hit
one and don't kill it, it duplicates itself. Save the game, and in the next
room, you'll find the Ultra Hammer, the best weapon for Mario, in the chest.
Yup, it's just sitting there, in the chest. Jump on the spring and ride the
screws, which take you to the next boss, Count Down.
Count Down is a tough boss. First use multi-hit spells to take out
one Ding-a-Ling, then the other. Super Jump works well. Equip the Princess
with the Saftey Ring to protect her from Fear Roulette. Count Down has a
weird time-based attack that does different things in a cycle.
Unfortunately, one of them is Petal Blast. Give somebody the Trueform Pin
and make sure you have plenty of Freshen Ups (and Pick Me Ups).
If you took a lot of hits in the Count Down fight, you may want to
leave, but it's probably not necessary. Save the game and jump on the
spring. Jump on the conveyors to get an Instant Mushroom in a chest. You
will have to fight Machine Made Axem Rangers. If you fall down here, you can
get a Flower and an Instant Mushroom. Ride the platform across and continue
to the next screen. Dodge the arrows or you will be frozen and get into at
least one fight. You will find Machine Made Macks here, these give you good
experience and money, but there's better paydays later. Keep going and cross
on the conveyor belts by walking upwards constantly. Open the chest for
Royal Syrup and then jump on the platform for a Max Mushroom. On the next
screen are Machine Made Bowyers. This is a great way to get experience and
coins. Just stand at the bottom of the conveyor and kill the Bowyers. When
you're done rolling up points, head up the conveyors and use the spaces
between their movement areas to jump the Axem Rangers. Then head up the
conveyors to a screen with a group of Ninjas and a Machine Made Yaridovich.
Keep going for a Flower and an Instant Mushroom, then go back and kill the
Yaridovich to open the hole. Drop down to fight Cloaker and Domino.
Attack Cloaker with regular hits or most spells (Jumps work well).
Make sure to use Geno Boost on everybody (assuming you're using Geno) before
you kill Cloaker. Domino will then escape and jump on the Mad Adder. Any
Geno Boosts (or negative status changes) will be kept. Attack Domino with
weapons (magic takes off single digits) until he dies, then go after the Mad
Adder, using magic or weapons. This fight isn't nearly as hard as Count
Down. After you beat them, you'll enter the Factory proper.
Beat up the Clerk and the Mad Mallets and head north. Toad will show
up and sell you items, if you need any. He even sells Froggie Drinks and
Max Mushrooms! Head north and you'll encounter the Manager and some
Pounders. Use the old leave-one trick on the Pounders and then knock off the
Manager. Continue north and you'll encounter the Director. Kill all but one
Poundette, then use Geno Boost so you can damage the Director. After you
beat him, save the game and go north. You'll encounter the Factory Chief,
and his invention, the Gunyolk.
Kill the Factory Chief quickly (i.e, don't use Geno Boost), then go
after the Gunyolk. The Gunyolk can use the Blade's Breaker Beam, so be sure
to stay healed. It's better to keep the characters you do have alive than to
revive dead ones. Group Hug comes in very useful here. When you beat him,
save the game and make sure you have a good stock of Maple and/or Royal Syrup
and Pick Me Ups before you take on Smithy.
Attack Smelter (the pot on the left) first, so Smithy can't create
Shypers. The Princess should heal every turn her turn comes up. Boost her
last because she rarely gets to hit. After you kill Smelter, go after Smithy
with your strongest spells and attacks (normal hitting seems to actually be
more effective than magic). He isn't that hard... because he's not the last
boss. After you beat him, the factory will collapse, and Smithy will reveal
his true form (I think the first one looks cooler).
There are actually two Smithys, one the body and one the head. If
you want, you can kill the body first and then go after the head (the real
boss), but it will regenerate after a while. It's your choice, but I
recommend killing the body as it can heal Smithy. Smithy will morph into
different forms, allowing him to use different attacks. The ghost one is the
worst. If he's in that form, stop attacking the body and go after the head
until he changes forms again. The chest is also bad because he can mute your
characters. If that happens, heal with Kerokero Cola until it wears off, or
use Freshen Ups to return to normal. When you beat Smithy, you get to watch
the ending.
