This is the last update of this FAQ, although small updates continue as I get
this FAQ posted on other sites besides GameFaqs. Summer is nearly here (6
weeks for me at the time of this writing) and it's gonna be great. My counter-
strike faq is coming along nicely and may make its pre-summer due date. My
next FAQ after my CS one will either be Medal Of Honour or Battlefield 1942.

E3 was pretty cool, I didn't get to go but I was practically sitting on my
computer on the gamespy home page hitting the F5 key waiting for stuff to come
in. HL2 is looking amazing so does Battlefield 2. I wanted to see more from
GTA san adres though besides screen shots. I liked Warhammer Online also.
Anyway E3 was cool. Well that's all for me, Zakaloot out.

|| (iii) Why Buy This Game ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||
||==========================================================================||

Seeing that NHL 2004 is out and the reviews are raving it, why would anyone
buy NHL 2002? There are a few reasons actually some are:

Non-Realism- EA Sports saw the success of Sega's NHL series EA changed its
entire franchise to realism instead of semi-realism with NHL 2004. Many fans
of the franchise like the semi-realism taste to it but can't get it. NHL 2003
was mediocre (I've only played the demo I'm getting this from reviews) so the
next one in the series is NHL 2002 which in my opinion is a fantastic game.

Price- You can pick this game up for about $10 Canadian (you do the math) at
most stores.

Low Specs- NHL 2002 does not need a monster computer to run it, a decent
computer can run it fine and at a good resolution with good graphics.

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 5.0 Gameplay Modes ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||
||==========================================================================||

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 5.1 Season ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

The Season is my favourite and most played game play mode in NHL 2002. At the
start you select the options for your season like how many teams there will be
and how many times they'll play each other. You can then move the teams into
different divisions and conferences and then you can select the team(s)
you want to use in the season. After all that is done you play your first
season game (!).

After the entire season is over, you will automatically be put into the play
offs (depending on how you placed in the season). You can then play through
the play offs. If you lose any of the rounds the game will simulate
all the games after your defeat and show a picture of the Stanley Cup with the
logo of the team who won it.

If you did not make the play offs the game will then simulate the play offs
and the post-season screen will show up with a picture of the Stanley Cup and
the logo of the team that won it.

After all that is over you can look at who won the awards and have the option
to continue your season for 9 more seasons (!) this is where the rookie and
free agent drafting takes place.

Since you will be playing with one team over and over again, you'll want to
get to know the team well and cover their weak spots.

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 5.2 Play Offs ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

Play off is probably what all teams wait for so they can have a chance at
Hockey's Holy Grail, the Stanley Cup. There are four rounds in the play offs
and only the teams that place 8th or above in their respective conferences can
participate.

Usually the rounds are out of 7, but they can also be out of 5, 3 or 1.
If you win the best out of, you progress to the next round, if you lose you
get knocked out and cannot play any more hockey until the next season starts.
However, if you win all the rounds you win the Stanley Cup.

Since you play the same team for a maximum of four times, you should get to
know that team, its lines, its goalie, its weak spots and its strong spots.
Knowing is half the battle.

|| 5.3 Tournaments ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

A tournament is usually between countries and is like the Olympics. Let me say
now, unless you are good, or want to play Team Canada or Team America, I
recommend you DON'T play Tournament mode. In International sports, a team can
REALLY suck. Not to diss anyone but I'm saying the truth.

A tournament is similar to a season-play off, each team CAN face every other
team if round robin is selected, if not each team plays each team in its pool.

After each team has played each other team, the medal rounds start and the
ladder is like this:

Shootouts are intense ways of playing hockey. Here is a diagram showing what a
Shootout looks like from the broadcast camera view:

O-() - Player With Puck

As we can see from the diagram, the only players on the ice are the goalie and
a player from the opposing team. The opposing player gets one shot to score
and if it is a penalty shot and the player scores, the team that scored gets a
point, if you are in a shootout and you score, it goes up on the scoreboard
and at the end of the shootout, the team with most points wins.

When you are defending a penalty shot, jam down the 'save attempt' button
and if you have a good goalie, it shouldn't go in.

When taking a penalty shot, be sure to get close, but not so close that he
poke checks it away form you. Refer to 7.4 for more strategy.

|============================================================================|
| 6.5.0 Level One |
|============================================================================|

|---------------|-----------------|
| Skill Level | Points |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Beginner | 200 |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Easy | 400 |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Medium | 600 |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Difficult | 800 |
|---------------------------------|

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Connect 10 passes:

Basically press pass and make sure the reciver gets the puck.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd star selection:

Basically dominate the play, score a lot of goals and if possible a shutout.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a goal:

Not very hard at all. See 11.4 for more details.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a 2 -on- 1 goal:

You and a teammate skating down the ice scoring against the goalie.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score A Rebound:

Take a shot from center ice and it is likely it will rebound off the goalie
allowing a shot be you. Or take a HUGE slap shot and the goalie might fall
over and it takes him time to get up, if you can catch the puck you are
almost guaranteed a goal.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score With A Big Shooter:

These are the guys with hockey stick icons next to their name when you control
them in game. Just score with them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win 10+ Face offs in a Period:

Not complicated, although some goalies simply never want to hold the puck and
face offs can be scarce.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score A Goal With Two Different Players: In Hockey terms; AN ASSIST.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get 10 Stops On Goal In One Period:

If you are dominating the game, give the puck away so they can take shots, but
beware some shots could go in.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score First Goal Of The Game:

This is pretty easy, take the puck early in the game and score.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get Full Team Emotion:
Big Hits Big Shots. Try this- get a breakaway, take a slap shot and then big
hit another player, this surely well make the emotion soar.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win 1 Face off: I think you can do this. See Section 11.1.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score A One Timer:
To do a one-timer pass to a teammate in your opponent's zone and jam the shoot
button before it gets to him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win 5 Face offs:

See 11.1.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intercept A Pass:

When the other team is passing get in the way and steals it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score Three Goals:

You SHOULD be able to do this on your own... See 11.4.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win A Game:

You SHOULD be able to win your at least your first 3 games after knowing the
controls.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

|============================================================================|
| 6.5.1 Level Two |
|============================================================================|

|---------------|-----------------|
| Skill Level | Points |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Beginner | 300 |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Easy | 600 |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Medium | 900 |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Difficult | 1200 |
|---------------|-----------------|

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get a Shutout:

A shutout is when a goalie gets no goals scored against them in one game, it
is like players getting goals. To do this you must achieve game domination and
keep the puck away from the other team at all costs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get 15 Hits in 1 period:

This is simple, when you control a player press the big hit button and
successfully hit 15 players.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get 5 Big Hits by one player:

To do this look for the player that has the hammer icon under his name, then
big hit everyone in sight.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a Hat Trick with one player:

A hat trick is when one player gets 3 goals. This can be difficult because
some people can't score even two goals with one player, so the best advice I
can give you is pass to a good goal scorer and take shots with him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a Short Handed Goal:

Short handed is when you get a penalty and a player must sit out for what he
did leaving the team with the penalty with only four people and the other team
with all 5. All you have to do is score a goal in this short handedness, but
this should not be hard because you should jam pack all your good players
into the penalty killing and power play lines.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score on a Breakaway:

A breakaway is when the player breaks away(note the name) from the play with
the puck and is the only one in the other zone triggering a 1-on-1 situation,
these are the easiest to score with.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get 2 or fewer penalties in a game: Turn the penalty factor at the AI screen
down or just stop hitting when you don't have to.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get the Game Tying goal:

This is the goal that ties the game up and forces overtime (if its turned on).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a Natural Hat Trick:

**Update** Turns out my version of a Natural Hat Trick was wrong, thanks to
Sabresrock6181 for clearing it up. **Update**

A Natural Hat is when a player scores 3 goals without anyone else scoring any
goals in between his three. To complete get a strong player (like M. Lemieux
and J. Sakic) and get all the other teammates to pass to the player and keep
hammering the puck.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a Deflection goal:

When in opponent's zone, pass to a player and then press the deflection
button, it will deflect off his stick or skate, and hopefully, into the back
of the net.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get a +/- rating of 4 for one player:

Your player gets a + when your team scores when he is on the ice and - when
the opposing team scores when he is on the ice. So, you need to score 4 goals
while a player is on the ice and can't get scored on when he is on the ice.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win an Overtime Game in the Playoffs:

Just what it sounds like.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finish 1st in Playoff GAA:

GAA stands for Goals Against Average, so don't get many goals scored on you in
the play offs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score 20 goals with one player in a Season:

Just what it sounds like.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win 3 consecutive Road games in a Season:

Just what it sounds like.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the EA Sports Trophy in Season Mode:

The EA Sports trophy is awarded to the player who gets the most star
selections (first star, second star etc.,).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the All-Star Game in Season Mode:

This shouldn't be hard because the all-star team is one of the best teams.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finish 1st in your Conference in Season Mode:

Just what it sounds like.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finish 1st in your Division in Season Mode:

Just what it sounds like.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finish 1st in your 16 Team Tournament Pool:

Just what it sounds like.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the Bronze Medal in Tournament Mode:

Make to the semi final in the tournament, lose that game and than win the next
game.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

|---------------|-----------------|
| Skill Level | Points |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Beginner | 400 |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Easy | 800 |
|---------------|-----------------|
| Medium | 1200 |

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score in the opening thirty seconds of any period:

Hard but possible, take your best player make him defense, then in game pass
to that player in the face-off speed burst to the opponent goalie and go to
one side deke to the other side and let a big one loose.

NOTE- You will need to win the face-off in order for this to work and make
each period 10 minutes or longer from the AI menu.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With one player, get a Goal, Assist and a Penalty:

Take a player (a big hitter is recommended) then burn his name into your
memory. Later try and score, use him to pass to another player, and have him
take a hard shot on net. Then after you have the goal and assist, take your
player and check EVERYONE on the other team.

TIP- If your player boost and goalie are at max and your opponent's is at
zero, and your penalty factor on the AI page is at max, you will complete this
task with more ease.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score on three Penalty Shots in an Overtime Shootout:

See section 5.4 on info about shoot outs. All you need to do is score 3 Goals
out of 5.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Complete 50% of your power plays in a game:

Completing a power play is scoring on a power play. If you have 6 power play
opportunities, you will need to score 3 of them to complete 50% of the power
plays.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finish a Game with 80% Penalty Kill Rate:

A Penalty Kill is when someone on your team gets a penalty, and the other team
doesn't score while your player has that penalty.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win a Playoff Game in an Overtime Shootout:

Simply win a shootout game in the Playoffs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win all your Playoff road games:

A Road game is when you play a game somewhere other than your own town
(ex: Toronto playing at Vancouver) and win all those games.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get a Shutout in a Playoff game:

Simply get a shutout (when none of the opposing teams gets a goal) in the
playoffs, it is harder than the normal season however, because most teams in
the playoffs are actually good. Darn :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lead the League in Goals For Playoff games:

Basically get one person to score goals the most and you will complete this
task when the playoffs end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score thirty goals with one player in a season:

Simple task, but to insure success the player which you are scoring with
should have his overall score in the 90s.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win five consecutive Road games in a season:

In season mode, after you play a game, on the very first screen will be an
option called "Today in EA Sports" In it is the calendar, it shows you which
games you will be playing in the future. Here see when you will be playing 5
away games in a row (away games are colour-coded red I think).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win 75% of your Conference opponent games:

Win as many games as you can.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the Stanley Cup in Season Mode:

Go through season mode, make it into the playoffs and then win the play-offs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the Calder Trophy in Season Mode:

The Calder Trophy is for "Rookie of the
Year", good rookies are hard to find so trade early on in the season and make
him good. If that fails you can always pick another rookie up in the rookie
draft.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the Hart Memorial Trophy in Season Mode:

Basically a MVP award. Score lots of goals and assist and other things that
help the team.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the Lady Byng Trophy in Season Mode:

Given to the person with fewest penalty minutes and fewest checks, but most
goals. For me this is a very hard task to do. I like to play rough, but I find
if you get less than 5 checks with one players a game (average) and score lots
of goals you can still win.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the Maurice Richard Trophy in Season Mode:

Most trophies include goal scoring as a minimum for receiving the trophy, but
the Maurice Richard trophy is 100% goals. It is awarded to however scores the
most goals in a season. I don't think any help is required.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get five Shutouts in a Season:

A shutout... times 5!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finish with a GAA 2.00 or below in a Season:

GAA is Goals Against Average; it is how many goals your goalie lets in on
average. Legendary Goalies get GAAs of below 2.00 ei., Terry Sawchuck, Ed
Belfour.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get a +/- rating for one player of forty or higher:

I've already explained this so go see it of you don't know what it means. To
complete this task keep one line out for most of the time (preferably the
scoring line) and score like mad.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Win the Silver Medal in Tournament Mode:

To win the silver medal go to the gold game then lose, then win the next game.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

|============================================================================|
| 6.5.3 Level Four |
|============================================================================|

|---------------------------------|
| Skill Level | Points |
|---------------------------------|
| Beginner | 500 |
|---------------------------------|
| Easy | 1000 |
|---------------------------------|
| Medium | 1500 |
|---------------------------------|
| Difficult | 2000 |
|---------------------------------|

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a Hat-Trick with two different players:

A hard one, you must get at least 6 goals to complete this task. Focus on one
player at a time and offense rush them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a Shorthanded Goal and the Game:

Winning Goal with same player- Get a player that is a good shooter and hard
hitter and then use him to get a penalty. The score a goal, if you cant you
can always get another penalty. After you score short handed don't score any
more goals or even try to score any more. If the opposing scores score another
goal and you finish the task.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score a Shorthanded Goal while being on five-on-three:

Try to get two players that get penalties a lot and put one on a line and the
other on the PK line. When the 1st player gets a penalty, the PK line will
come on the with your 2nd player, depending on how bad it was, you have 2-5
minutes to get another penalty. Then score. Fights are a good way to complete
this task.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score all five Penalty Shots in a Shootout:

If you are good at scoring, its easy but if you're not, shootouts are a great
way to practice.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Score on the first shot of the Game:

Pretty hard but make sure the player that takes you first shot is your star
player.

|| ||
||==========================================================================||

||=====================================================||
|| "It [Face-offs] Takes Timing And Patience, P.S., ||
|| Don't Just Mash The Buttons." ||
|| - Don Taylor, NHL 2002 Colour Commentator ||
||=====================================================||

The face-off is an important part of the game. It can give you the early edge
you need to win.

The referee will drop the puck the puck and then jam the draw puck button and
pass to a player (probably the defense because no one can check them right
away). You can choose to continue with the defense player or pass to an open
forward.

If the opposing team wins the face off, you should be in control of a forward
and check the guy in front of you. Usually the computer passes to defense then
passes back to the forwards. Checking a forward can break a pass allowing you
to jump on the loose puck.

Below is a diagram of how you should take that type of face off.

|----------------------------------------------------------------|
| Y2 X3 |
| Y4 X4 |
| Y1 0 X1 |

GY = Goalie for team Y
GX = Goalie for team X
0 = Face off Circle
Y3, Y1, Y2 = Forwards for team Y
Y4, Y5 = Defense for team Y
X2, X1, X3 = Forwards for team X
X5, X4 = Defense for team X

-
The double || and - indicate where the player should go. Player X1 should pass
to player X5 so he can go around team Y's players and take a hard shot on net.

When taking a face-off in your own zone pass to the defenseman closest to the
net and then go behind the net with him and pass off to an open forward.

When taking the face-off in your opponent's zone, pass off to the defenseman
closest to the net and take a good hard shot.

When taking a face-off in the center pass off to a defenseman and then pass to
the other defenseman and then pass to an open forward.

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 7.2 Passing ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

Passing is most probably the most useful thing you can do in game besides
checking and shooting. Basically a pass is when a member of your team "passes"
or gives the puck away to another member of your team. Once you have control
of the puck press the pass button to give the puck away.

Holding the pass button longer can give you a saucer pass that makes the pass
go above the player's sticks and therefore it might prevent a pass
interception.

You should pass when it takes the puck out of your zone, gives another player
on your team a scoring chance, keeps it away from the other team or gives you
the upper hand in any way.

You should NOT pass when it can be intercepted by the other team, when the
goalie can poke check it away from you, or when the other team has a chance to
get it.

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 7.3 Checking ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

This is my FAVOURITE thing to do in NHL 2002. Besides being HILARIOUS to
watch, checking can injure a player, (very use full when facing some one like
J. Sakic), give you control of the puck and also can complete tasks on the
task list.

||=======================================||
|| "Step 1: Crush Someone. ||
|| Step 2: Get The Heck out of there"- ||
|| Don Taylor, NHL 2002 Colour Commentary||
||=======================================||

Checks also have negative effects, one is the penalty factor; getting 70+
checks in a game almost guarantee you a penalty (unless the penalty factor on
the AI page is low).

Fights can also occur while checking or receiving a check giving your player a
5-minute major even if he loses the fight.

When checking a guy on open ice, it is best to be in front of him and then
check because it will give the guy who checked the other guy the puck.

Checking from behind can get you a 5-minute major for checking from behind
so be careful when doing so. Checking from left or right is good, but too
often the player dekes you out.

When boarding a guy, try to come from the back or the front, back is better
because he won't know you're there and will not try to Deke you out. Boarding
from the side is hard because you may miss when you go for the hit. You can
also get a penalty for boarding so again be careful.

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 7.4 Shooting ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

Shooting is the most important thing you can do in NHL 2002, I cannot stress
this enough.

You can win all the face offs, connect all your passes, and get
250+ checks in a single game, win all the fights, have the best lines, and the
ultimate coaching strategy, but it all sums up to nothing if you can't shoot
and score. This is the most important skill to learn in NHL 2002.

Since shooting is important and broad I split it up into types of shots and
playing styles and positioning.

||==========================================================================||
|| ~Types of Shots~ ||
||==========================================================================||

Slap shot- One of the most effective shots in NHL 2002 and real hockey.
Sometimes a shot can go 200 KPH! Sadly the slap shot will only get you so far
and you'll find yourself with not enough time to pull off a fast and powerful
shot and be checked before you can pull off the shot. Excellent when you have
the time, if you don't, stick with the wrist shot.
83/100

Wrist Shot- This is my favourite shot to do in NHL 2002. It is fast, accurate,
and takes very little time to complete. The only drawback I suppose is that
they follow the rule of quantity, not quality because most wrist shots are
easy to save and you could easily pull off 20 or more before scoring a goal.

Backhand Shots- I never really found these shots effective, I've only scored a
couple of times with them and not many players have a strong backhand shot.

|| 7.5 Fights ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

Fights features two guys who are mad at each other and want to fight to settle
their problems. You choose either high or low punch to knock out the other
person.

The only thing you get is team emotion and a player of the other team out for
5 minutes as well as yours. Each player has a fight attribute and players with
higher fight attributes are more likely to start a fight and have a good
chance of winning if they start one.

If you throw no punches, and let yourself get knocked out, you will only get a
2-minute penalty for roughing while the other guy will get a 5-minute major
for fighting. After your penalty minutes are up, you'll get a 3-minute power
play and if you do score, the player doesn't come out of the penalty box
because it is a major penalty. The play-by-play commentary will probably make
fun of you for losing the fight, and the crowd will probably boo you, but who
cares?

|| ||
||==========================================================================||
||==========================================================================||

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 8.1 Editing Lines ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

Editing lines can be tough for any coach, in the game or in real life. Make
sure that no player plays more than 4 games in a row and no player misses more
than 4 games in a row, it is necessary to switch up your lines whenever
possible, even during a game.

Make sure you combine rookies with veterans also, an all rookie line won't do
you any good and neiher will an all veteran line because if they get tired
with 2 mins left and the score is tied, you are doomed.

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 8.2 Trading ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

Trading is a good way to get new players and get rid of your mediocre players.
Unless you make it so that the computer teams can't say no to your trades,
trading takes a lot of work. If you have set that option then you can mold
your team into a team full of 80+ players, it takes the challenge out of it
but hey, a little fun now and then is ok.

None of teams are stupid, they won't except you trading a 50 rookie for a 90
star, if you want that person you'll need to either:

1) give them something they need, most of the time the game will tell you if
their team needs anything (a defenseman etc) and will over a counter-trade.

2) Offer a equally good player, an option would be to offer a player of
equivalent skill to the person your trading, if they are close enough in score
the trade will likely go through.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tip by WERO SHINODA

Hi, i found out something about TRADING, you might like. You can take a low
overall player (65+) and trade it for a higher overall player in 1, 2 or even
3 points, then you can take that player and trade with another team for
another player with 1, 2 or 3 points higher overall, you can continue doing
this over and over, this way i got M Modano, J Jagr, O Nolan, E Lindros, J
Sakic, etc,

||==========================================================================||
|| ||
|| 8.3 Drafting ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||

|============================================================================|
| 8.3.0 Pre-Season Drafting |
|============================================================================|

Drafting is a fun way to start off a season however, there is proper drafting
and improper drafting. If you draft first (or make yourself draft first),
ALWAYS DRAFT D. HASEK INTO YOUR TEAM. Why you may ask? Simple; the goalie
spends the most time on the ice, even more minutes than J. Sakic or
M. Lemieux. A strong goalie is a strong team.

After you have drafted a good goalie, be quick to draft the good players and
when they start to run dry, see about getting a secondary goalie and forwards
and defensemen.

If you didn't get all the players you wanted, you can always trade them into
your team after the draft.

||====================================================================||
|| The computer will always pick the best overall players in a draft ||
||====================================================================||

|============================================================================|
| 8.3.1 Rookie Drafting |
|============================================================================|

Rookie drafting is, as the name applies, drafting rookies into your team from
lower leagues (such as the AHL). Most rookies are 65-80 in overall statistics.
Although this may not look or sound appealing for your powerhouse 85+ stat
team, rookies are a great addition to any team.

I recommend you DON'T get rookie goalies unless they are over 80 overall. The
only way to improve them would be to use them and that isn't practical unless
you have a top-notch defense and the patience to raise a "N00B" goalie.

While looking at overall statistics, also look at the POTENTIAL part of the
player. Most NHL players have a low potential rating in the range of 50-75. A
few worthwhile rookies will/should have a high potential rating.

You only get 1 rookie per round so choose wisely. Also, don't clutter your
team with rookies, have a balance of rookies and pros.

REMEMBER- Try and rookies of all positions instead of just 1 or two because
"there is no I in team"

|============================================================================|
| 8.3.2 Free Agent Drafting |
|============================================================================|

Free agent drafting is how you say... "unfair as hell". The big market teams,
Detroit, Dallas etc., get all the good players while the small market teams
Vancouver, etc., get the mediocre to bad players and occasionally a good
player. I am just talking about my experience Free Agent Drafting.

If your contract runs out with a player, he becomes a free agent and if you
want him back, you'll have to try and draft him back, which isn't always easy.

|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| ~If You Are a Small Market Team~ |
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Most players won't come to your team 'cause you can't pay them enough money SO
Draft only players that have a smiley face or the medium face, DO NOT TRY AND
GET THE FROWNING PLAYERS, you will just waste your time and a chance to draft
a really good player.

|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| ~If You Are a Big Market Team~ |
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Since you can probably take any guy anyway, try and draft the first 3 best
players. You have a pretty good chance of drafting the frowning players 'cause
of our huge profits so go for it.

|| 9.0 General Tips ||
|| ||
||==========================================================================||
||==========================================================================||

||===============================================================||
|| "If Your Enemy Defends The Front, He Is Weak In The Back, ||
|| If He Defends The Back, He Is Weak In The Front, If He ||
|| defends His Left, He Is Weak In His Right, If He Defends ||
|| His Right, He Is Weak In The Left, And If He Defends ||
|| Everywhere, He Is Weak Everywhere."- Sun Tzu, The Art of War ||
||===============================================================||

A number of strategies can be drawn from this quote, one is that no one can
defend everywhere at once and you should take advantage of the times where is
weak.

Another is don't try to defend everywhere, no matter how hard you or I try,
defending the entire rink is just not possible unless you spread out your
players thinly making you weak everywhere.

Another strategy would always look for weak spots, no matter how large or
small they are, take advantage of them and victory will be yours.

|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| One-Timers Are Your Friend |
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

One-Timers almost always equal goals. One-Timers are when a teammate passes to
another player and that player quickly takes a shot on net surprising the
goalie. This is very effective in scoring points for your team and raking in
points for individual players.

|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Pass Often |
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Passing is the key to success, make sure your passes are quick, sharp and
accurate. You should usually pass whenever you get the puck unless it can be
taken off you, or you have a clear shot at the net.

|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Shoot out the Lights |
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Whenever you have a chance, take a shot at the net, even though you think the
goalie will save it, sometimes it can slip past him.

|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Camp the Net |
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Yes many people hate campers, but in this game its ok. By camp the net I mean
you should stay close to the net and keep hammering the puck into the net, if
the goalie saves it, keep rebounding it until you score or the other team
brings the puck into your zone.

|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Defend The middle of the Net |
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Most of the goals that people will score on you will be infront of the net, so
always defend the front of net.

| When the circle is black you are actually not controlling the player, the |

| where you pick jerseys, you will see the two team. Below each of the teams |
| and in the middle will be a controller, depending on what you use to play |

|------------------------------|-Calder Trophy-|-----------------------------|
| |
| Awarded to- Best Rookie |
| |
| How to Get- Look for players in their 1st year or draft some good rookies |

|--------------------------------|-Lady Byng-|-------------------------------|
| |
| Awarded to- To the player judged to have the best Sportsmanship and |
| gentlemanly conduct combined with high playing ability. |
| |
| How to Get- Well for those who don't understand what the above means, it |
| is a player who has few checks, but lots of goals and assists. For me this |
| was very hard to accomplish as I'm quite a warmonger BUT it is possible. |
| There are two ways I have thought up to get this trophy. |
| |
| 1) 1 player should go soft- 1 player on your team, preferably a good |
| scorer, should stop checking altogether and let his teammates check the |
| opponents, get them to pass to the 'soft' player and let him score racking |
| up goals but not checks. |
| |
| 2) The whole team goes soft- This is easier than converting 1 player, your |
| entire team should stop using body checks and start using poke checks to |
| take the puck off your opponent, it is slightly less effective but still |
| works. |
| |
|--------------------------------|-Lady Byng-|-------------------------------|

|-----------------------------|-Art Ross Trophy-|----------------------------|

| |

||==========================================================================||

||==========================================================================||
|| 11/16/03 "The History Of This FAQ and My Experience With GameFAQs" ||
||==========================================================================||

Not the revision history, this FAQ has a lot of history not told to the public
until now.

Summer of 2000- My friend showed me a site called GameFAQs, it was great site,
codes, guides, reviews and a message board for each game all in one site!

After using it (and loving it) for about a one year I decided I wanted to give
something back to my favourite game site so I practically memorized the help
section and thought I'd review games for GameFAQs. At that point I bought NHL
2002 and became addicted.

I made my first review phrasing NHL 2002, but I didn't like it and trashed it.
I looked at the help section again and saw tons of guides about writing FAQs,
and read them. I decided to make a FAQ about NHL 2002. I made my first copy,
submitted it, but it got rejected. I tried again but it got rejected again.
Angered, I scraped the entire thing and started all over with new stuff,
filtered out the garbage that was in my FAQ and finished.

This was my first FAQ however, so I didn't know anything about what it was
like to handle e-mail, the response and other things so I made my Netstorm FAQ
first, got experience with handling e-mails etc., and then I submitted my NHL
FAQ and it got accepted. The rest is history.

||==========================================================================||
|| 10/16/03- It's Not Over 'Till It is Over ||
||==========================================================================||

Yes this version has taken a LONG time but it was well worth it. I wanted to
finish more things up before I sent this version in but I got a few Emails
about this and if I was still working on this or not. The answer is YES. About
95% of my FAQ writing time is in this FAQ and about 5% in my Netstorm FAQ and
other FAQs.

I will write when I am moving on to another FAQ so don't think I'm abandoning
this FAQ and it has been a long time since the last update it is because:

1) There is lots of stuff that needs to be added
OR
2) I haven't got any time to write (probably a school project)
