Free League Launches City of My Nightmares, a New Vaesen Campaign of Murder and Mystery

A four-part investigation uncovering a conspiracy tied to the Society's origins

Stockholm, Sweden (April 7, 2026) | Today, Free League Publishing announced the release of City of My Nightmares, a new full-length campaign expansion for the award-winning Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying. The expansion invites players into a dark, investigative mystery set in 19th-century Stockholm, and expands the game's lore with new insight into the origins of the Society.

City of My Nightmares is available through the Free League webshop, at hobby stores worldwide, and digitally via DriveThruRPG.

Spanning four interconnected parts, City of My Nightmares begins with a series of murders in Stockholm. What starts as a local investigation quickly escalates into a far-reaching conspiracy tied to the Society itself, threatening to plunge the city into chaos. Designed for extended play, the campaign provides Gamemasters with a structured yet flexible mystery that builds from grounded investigation to city-wide stakes.

Written by Kiku Pukk Härenstam, the campaign delivers a layered narrative experience supported by rich worldbuilding and escalating tension. The setting is brought to life through illustrations by Johan Egerkrans and Anton Vitus, capturing the eerie atmosphere of a gothic capital shaped by folklore and fear.

About Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying

"In dark forests, beyond the mountains, by black lakes in hidden groves. At your doorstep. In the shadows, something stirs. Strange beings. Twisted creatures, lurking at the edge of vision. Watching. Waiting. Unseen by most, but not by you. You see them for what they really are. Vaesen."

Welcome to the Mythic North, northern Europe of the nineteenth century, as it never truly was. A land where folklore and old myths are real, and investigators confront the supernatural lurking beneath the surface of a rapidly changing world. Players take on the roles of investigators who are able to perceive and confront the Vaesen, supernatural beings from Nordic mythology.

Based on the acclaimed work of Swedish illustrator Johan Egerkrans, Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying is a Gothic investigative tabletop roleplaying game rooted in Nordic folklore and powered by an adapted version of the award-winning Year Zero Engine. Since its initial release in 2020, the game has earned multiple industry honors, including three ENNIE Awards, and continues to expand with new mysteries and campaigns.
