Anime inspired, fast-paced metroidvania Kotama and Academy Citadel set to release on Steam on January 15th
December 17th, 2025 – The 3D side-scrolling metroidvania Kotama and Academy Citadel, developed by Atomstring Games and published by 2P Games, announces its release date with the publication of a new trailer. The game, set in a futuristic academy city, will release on Steam on January 15th. Players are welcome to try the demo and explore the Academy while waiting for the big opening.
Kotama and Academy Citadel is a fast-paced metroidvania where players will follow the steps of Kotama, a mysterious girl with amazing combat skills and fluid-control abilities, as she competes for the acclaimed title of Carmel Star in a futuristic academy.
STEP INTO THE ENCLOSED ACADEMY
The story takes place in the Carmel Academy, the pinnacle of cutting-edge science, where the law of strength above all stands as an unbreakable foundation. Players assume the role of Kotama, a mysterious girl claiming to be an exchange student who has just arrived at Carmel to compete for the Carmel Star title, a symbol of honour coveted by every student.
As the academy prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary, a new selection process for the Carmel Star begins. Throughout the journey, players will navigate a labyrinthine academy where magic and science fiction collide in surreal landscapes. And board trains travelling through space-time distortions to uncover the mysteries hidden within the radiant academy.
FIGHT TO BECOME THE CARMEL STAR
Kotama has arrived with clear intentions, and in the Carmel academy there's no space for hesitation or weaknesses. Players will face both elite students and bizarre enemies in intense, fast-paced combats where timing and precision are key. A set of diverse weapons and skills can be combined to create unique combat styles, executing dazzling combos during bullet time and unleashing Kotama's signature ability, Fluid Detonation, to turn the tide of battle.
MEET ELITE STUDENTS
In the pursuit of the Carmel Star crown, players will encounter a wide range of classmates, each with their own stories and motivations. By engaging with these characters and assisting them in their personal challenges, players can shape both the ending of their journey and the fate of the academy itself.
However, this grand contest of honour is only the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the glamorous surface of the academy lie many mysteries yet to be revealed. Change the course of the story, rescue the academy from crisis, uncover a century-old grand design hidden within the city, and unravel the secrets of Kotama's true origins.
