Once upon a time, Steve Rogers was frozen in a block of ice, only to be thawed years later, brought back to battle the forces of evil. Well, it just happened all over again, however, instead of finding a modern society, all Steve Rogers sees is a desolate wasteland. Crap. In order to bring back the world back to what it once was, he declares himself King Captain America! Confused yet?
This is the plot of the newest issue of Captain America (issue #700), which is a welcome change from the whole hydra storyline that we've grown accustomed to. On the cover, we see King Captain America standing on a ruined statue of Abe Lincoln’s head, surrounded by familiar heroes such as Hulk and the Thing... and some unfamiliar heroes as well.
This issue is being written by Mark Waid who is no stranger in shaking up the Marvel universe. Having written such great titles as Age of Ultron, Spiderman Family Business and Avengers vs X-Men, this is sure to be a wild ride. The art is being done by Chris Samnee, who has worked on titles such as Black Widow, Daredevil and The Age of Heroes. The big "get" here for many isn't going to be the story by Waid (excellent writer that he is), but the fact that the art has been repurposed for this cover, and was done by none other than the legendary Jack Kirby! Check out the cover and soak it in!
How do you feel about this latest incarnation of Captain America? Do you think this is a great direction for Marvel to go in? Did you dig the hydra stuff or are you ready to put it behind you?
