Well, that's kind of a bummer. According to PlayStation CEO John Kodera, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, "[Sony] will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,” said Tsuyoshi, in an odd description of their current business plan.
This information came a day after Sony’s new chief executive, Kenichiro Yoshida, spoke on their upcoming three-year plan, which was light on the hardware and heavy on online subscription services. Highlights include the PlayStation Plus $60 annual package, which encompasses games and multiplayer features. In a stroke of business genius, the CEO spoke about making money on "stable" sales, instead of focusing on "volatile" hardware.
Kodera went on to say that Sony needed to "depart from the traditional way of looking at the console life cycle," and that we are now in a time when you can think just about the console or just about the network like they’re two different things.”
I suppose this is all a fancy way of saying we are at least three years or so away from seeing a new PlayStation, but I don't think we should all get super worried yet. With games like God Of War hitting the system recently, it's clear that developers are still finding amazing ways to use the hardware. Have you seen those water effects? Go toss Kratos' ax into the water right now and recall it to your hand. Mother, Mary and Joseph, that looks pretty.
