We may be in for a treat, friends and neighbors. Witchfire, the new FPS from the development team behind The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, released a tasty trailer for their new (albeit far off) title, called Witchfire.
A departure from their previous game, which featured more surreal and thoughtful moments (among the grisly murders you're investigating), Witchfire takes place in what looks like a demented haunted forest, packed full of zombies and demonic entities that are begging to get shot in the face.
From the trailer, it looks like you'll have spells and supernatural moves in addition to guns that appear to be loaded with hellfire rounds, straight out of a Nightstalkers comic. It may seem a bit odd to go from Ethan Carter to this, but both games are from a first person perspective, and the dev team, called "The Astronauts", initially founded People Can Fly, which is best best known for games like Painkiller, Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment. Sounds like we are in good hands.
In a recent interview (well, they interviewed themselves), the team had this to say about the upcoming shooter and the change in direction from their last game to this:
"That change in direction isn’t anything new for the core team. The three co-owners of The Astronauts were also the co-owners of People Can Fly, as well as the creative leads behind shooters like Painkiller and Bulletstorm.
We love adventure games, and we’ve made some in the past, even before People Can Fly or our The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Mystery of the Statuette, Teenagent, The Prince and the Coward – all adventure games. As I have already mentioned, we’ve also made a few shooters, Painkiller and Bulletstorm. We have reached for other genres, too. Katharsis was a 2D arcade shooter, Reflux was an RTS, and Gorky 17 was a strategy RPG. There was also a big action adventure called Come Midnight that People Can Fly was making for THQ over ten years ago …but let’s leave that story for another time.
One of the reasons we called the studio The Astronauts was to emphasize the journey to new places. After we made an innovative – we think – narrative game, now we want to make a shooter unlike anything we’ve done before. Can’t wait to bring you along on the ride with us!"
Witchfire currently has no release date, but you can read more about it here.
