1) Introduction

Many people may shun the Granstream Saga as a substandard game. I think that
those people are gravely mistaken. Just because the graphics are a bit
dodgy, that doesn’t mean that the game is crap. In fact, I found the whole
thing an entirely enjoyable experience. The battle system is pretty good,
and the storyline isn’t too shabby either. I don’t know, perhaps its just
because I’m so addicted to RPGs that I liked it, but hey, there must be some
other RPG fanatics who liked it just as much as me. As per usual, I thought
I’d dispense my knowledge on the bosses in the game. There are only 9, but
they’re all pretty tough, so you might need some help...

2) Bosses

Shilf: Bordlang
This boss isn’t too tough if you’ve mastered using the shield (just press
circle). All of the magical traps and terrible falling boxes activated by
the baddy will be deflected by it. When he stops his seemingly endless chain
of attacks, dive in and hack at the arms when they are away from Bordlang.
Get used to sidestepping (R1 or L1), as it becomes very useful later in the
game. Once the hands are out of it, go in and start giving the head some
grief. Once this is knocked out you can save Shilf from sinking into the
Sea.

Aquas: Levante
Again, mastering the use of the shield is essential. What I found was a good
plan was to get behind him while he was standing on one of the weird circles
on the floor, get a few quick hits in, block his magical attack, and then
hit him a few more times to knock an LP bar off. He tries to turn round
after doing his magic, but you should be able to get him. Of course, you
could corner him and finish him off, as he can only really attack from the
circles on the floor and will not use the same circle twice, but this is
difficult to do, as I found out! When not on the circles, he can only attack
with a pack of cards (literally) which can easily be blocked. You can use
either tactic, just bear in mind that the first is easier. After a while of
Levante getting pummelled he will give up the ghost and you’ve saved Aquas.

Volcos: Herzegod
The bosses start to get much harder here. Herzegod is extremely annoying as
he will try to stay behind a wall of three spikes that will keep flying up
just in front of you as you circle round him, trying to get a hit in. What
you have to do is keep sidestepping until you are one step ahead of the
spikes, then lunge forward to stun Herzegod and get a few good hits in.
Watch out though, as the spikes will soon catch up with you. Also watch out
for the white and red blood cells that come up from the ground, and stay
with you for a long time, trying to sap your health. If you keep your shield
up, they will eventually go away, but there will always be another, waiting
to pop up from the ground. You also want to watch out for the various other
traps that occasionally make their appearance. Just keep circling around
Herzegod, with your shield up, waiting to take advantage of every mistake
the spikes make, and you’ll be fine.
With Herzegod defeated, you can move onto Zephere, where several bosses
await….

Zephere: Earth Dragon, Shilf: Wind Dragon, Aquas: Water Dragon, Volcos: Fire
Dragon
You will have to fight all four of these bosses to get your ancient stone
stamped and progress onto the next part of the adventure. The tactics for
each one is pretty similar, and so I have grouped them all under the same
heading. Once you have got the tactics for dragon beating, you can beat them
all easily. All the dragons’ attacks can be blocked, so you shouldn’t have a
problem with them. The only one to watch out for is a swipe attack that he
tends to use when you are behind him. The sprays that they use are just
annoying, and tend to pin you into corners. You have to knock an LP bar off
a dragon quickly, because if you do not, it uses a special restorative move
that fills it back up again. The general tactic with dragons is to sidestep
behind them when they are trying to spray you. Simply start hacking away at
his backside. He tries to turn and face you, but is slow and so you should
be able to outrun him easily. As I have said before, watch out for that
swipe attack.
Some comments for individual dragons: The Wind dragon behaves in a slightly
different way from all the other dragons in that he can spit green balls at
you. After he has done this, you have a nice opportunity to run behind him
and really do some damage. Watch out for his swipe attack, then attack him
once more and then get out of there fast! Magic can be used against the
dragons if you are having trouble: use regular magic such as lightning
against the Earth and Wind Dragons, Flame Shot or Heat Storm is useful
against the Ice Dragon, and Ice Arrows is useful against the Fire Dragon.
Once you have dropped all four dragons you can go back to Zephere and show
your stone to Karok. You are off on another quest, into the Underground
Cemetery, and then on to the Imperial Fortress to battle Gudelzepher!

Zephere: Gudelzepher
This boss is by far the hardest in the game. All his attacks are
unblockable, except for the blood spurt from his mouth, which he doesn’t use
often. What you need to do is run past the outer claws, which are invincible
and are desperately trying to pound you into the ground. Then you need to
dodge the onslaught of the inner claws, which try to get you as you near the
purple egg-thing. Even when you have done this, you need to wait right next
to the purple egg-thing for the protective claws to open, leaving the egg
vulnerable to attack. You need to then quickly move in and start pounding
the egg, until the inner claws decide you’ve done enough, and push you back,
knocking one LP bar off.
You need to keep repeating this cycle to defeat him. You also need to keep
an eye on your LP as each time a claw hits you, you’re gonna lose one LP
bar. Needless to say, healing items or magic are needed.
When you’ve defeated Gudelzepher, you have essentially completed the game,
all you need do now is to defeat the evil Mah Oh, Demaar, and you have done
it!

Gates of Hades: Demaar
This boss is not as hard as you may think; you only need to watch out for
the red crystals he throws on the floor. When this happens, back away from
the crystal by pressing down. While it appears that nothing is happening, if
you do not do it, the crystal will hit you, draining your HP and adding to
his. His green missiles and dive bomb are nothing to worry about, just put
up your shield and they will do no damage. When he eventually decides to
land, you can choose either to go in with your shield when he opens his
armour, exposing the weak body that can be damaged, stun him and then hack
away, until his armour shuts. Or you can just wait until his armour folds
back and then let rip with the Granstream spell, taking off one LP bar. Of
course, the problem about that is that he can very quickly shut his armour
and you’ve wasted 300MP.
In the end though, you’ll eventually end up just waiting until he lands and
then hack him to pieces with your sword.
After a while you will have drained all of his HP and LP bars and can enjoy
the final Manga cut sequence.
